Re: USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

I wonder if the disconnect could be an overheating problem with the VLI chip on the Pi which manages the USB. Have you tried cooling (maybe by placing the Pi vertically with a fan blowing on it) to see if all the problems just go away? Maybe the power-saving changes in the most recent firmware are ...

Re: USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

Have you tried using different / better adaptors? Different, yes. Out of quite a large number units (mine/friends/family) representing half dozen chipsets only 2 passed. Some DOA, some failed after few minutes. All working on USB2 or PC. Of course, bargain hunter that I am, there were finds that di...

Re: USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

I think I am seeing the same issue but with a USB3 NVMe enclosure instead of a hub. Similar errors in dmesg, intermittent failures after long periods. Did you happen to try disabling UAS, as suggested in the sticky that I referenced in my first post in this thread? What specific errors did you see ...

Re: USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

Has anyone made some headway on this issue? I'm also experiencing issues with an Amazon Basics USB 3.0 Powered hub. Original configuration was as follows RPi 4 / 4GB -> USB HUB USB HUB -> Disk1 USB HUB -> Disk2 I assume you had faults in the original config? Are you getting the same faults I had, i...

Re: Pi4 64-bit raspbian kernel for testing - Focus on Pi4

How were you able to compile the ZFS kernel module? I'm trying to do the same, but there isn't a kernel-headers or kernel-source package I can find, and downloading the official raspberrypi kernel source and building it results in "gcc: error: unrecognized command line option ‘-mgeneral-regs-only’"...

Re: USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

I'll continue testing, and see if I can get the issue to surface with smartmontools uninstalled, and report back here. I've replicated the issue both with and without smartmontools, so that theory can be discarded. I've also seen it happen on the 32 bit kernel. usbquirks didn't help, either. I'm wi...

Re: Pi4 64-bit raspbian kernel for testing - Focus on Pi4

I will also attempt to test the 32-bit kernel to see if this issue is unique to 64-bit, but it could possibly be a few weeks before I can get to it. After four days of testing the USB port with the hub attached (by looping dd reads of disks), I've replicated the issue on the 32 bit kernel, so I gue...

Re: Pi4 64-bit raspbian kernel for testing - Focus on Pi4

I'm currently testing a theory that the smartmontools package is triggering the error, but I can't declare it with any confidence until I've been able to test for several days, at least. I will also attempt to test the 32-bit kernel to see if this issue is unique to 64-bit, but it could possibly be...

I've just created a post that describes some problems I've been experiencing with USB hubs. I can't really say with any certainty if it's the 64 bit kernel, since I haven't really done any testing with the 32 bit kernel yet. If it's warranted, I'd be happy to oblige, as time permits. Re: USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

The 64 bit kernel is still beta, so would be interested to know if you see the same problems with the 32bit kernel. Meanwhile, I'm trying to locate similar hubs so we can do some internal testing. Well, firstly, I've seen the issue with UAS disabled/USB storage quirks enabled, so that can also be r...

Re: USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

I do not (yet) have a Pi4. On my Pi's (zero, 1B, 1B+ ,2B, 3B) its not a problem backfeeding power via the USB to my experience Provided your PSU this way in has enough umph, you can run the Pi off this power. Its best to use the dedicated OTG power port to avoid any sudden power loss if you need to...

Re: USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

It should be possible to power any USB hub via a USB male A to male A from a standard USB supply. These cables are available from AliExpress, Ebay etc. This will of course take up that one hub port used only for power connection. If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can always open the hub a...

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 USB 3.0 HUB/extension board?

Not all USB 3.0 hubs work on a Raspberry Pi. Look for hubs that specify Linux compatibility, and hope for the best. Do USB 3 hubs which aren't Linux compatible exist? I thought such would be similar to USB2 hubs which are standard. Well, 2 of the first 3 hubs I tried out on my Pi4 "worked" initiall...

Re: USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

A quick update: I've pumped another 30TB of data through the USB port using the USB hub with the VL812 chipset, with no issues. Powered hubs based on the VL812 seem pretty spendy, but I found an affordable hub that has the option of being powered through a micro USB port and is based on the VL817, w...

RandyOo, Somewhere in another post is a discussion about the Pi 4 and some issues a few of us were having with USB 3 hubs and rebooting the Pi 4. USB 3.0 hubs unreliable on Pi4

I've had a pretty frustrating experience thus far, in my attempts to set up a reliable Network Attached Storage server on my new Pi4. I've connected two self-powered 12TB WD Easystore external HDDs via a USB 3.0 hub, and have been plagued with intermittent USB disconnects/resets, causing data corrup...

Thanks for sharing this. I've already gotten ZFS compiled and running, but if I have to set it up again, I'll give these scripts a whirl. Certainly looking forward to the 64-bit userland, and the simplification of using Debian's packages directly! Quick aside, I was curious: does using the "-j 6" op...

I just posted in the Pi4 64-bit kernel thread, but suppose it merits sharing here, too: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=250730&p=1566275#p1566275 TLDR: ZFS sorta works on the default kernel, but repeatedly triggered memory errors on a moderate load. Re: Pi4 64-bit raspbian kernel for testing - Focus on Pi4

Reporting in... I bought a 4GB Pi4 with the sole intent of having it perform the role of a small ZFS-based NAS, now that it has USB 3.0, gigabit ethernet, and lots more RAM. I had already managed to get ZFS up and running on Pi3, so I knew it could be done. I managed to get ZFS compiled and running ...

Re: Anyone tried ZFS on Pi 4 or planning to do so?

I have compiled the 0.8.2 version from Github according to these instructions, but now I don't know how to create an initramfs. There are packages for 0.7.6 that I can see, but I'd rather not uninstall 0.8.2 and go to an older version. Any pointers? Otherwise it works perfectly. I just followed man...
