You are both probably right, the original idea was to save power, but spinning down the disks would be the cleaner solution than brutally unplugging them. Still I am wondering: Whenever the connection to the disks is lost, kodi warns me that device XY has been removed uncleanly. But xbian keeps the ...

I would like to use two USB powered external hard drives with my raspberry 2 running xbian. Connecting them directly to the PI caused instability, which I assume is due to lack of power.
