That enables Bonjour (aka mDNS) and you can use http://somenamehere.local (somenamehere) comes from /etc/hostname which can be set with sudo raspi-config.

That sounds achievable. Where would I store the MAC addresses? Which lookup file?

Hmmm. I have an Intenso USB3.0 1TB external HDD, and plugged that into my HG533. I can browse its contents using Browse Network on my Linux Min box, but when I tried mounting it as you said on my Rasp Pi (or my Linux box for that matter), all I get is: mount error(13): Permission denied Any ideas?
