Retropie - building from parts

What I'm looking to understand is the following... There are lots of Kodi, media watching, software, etc builds on Raspberry Pi that can be built from scratch but are also available in a premade build that already works. But is Retropie something that can be built in such a way that you can control ...

Re: Help identifying a Rpi?

I think KODI is building it into KODI 18 https://kodi.wiki/view/Kodi_v18_(Leia)_changelog#Gaming_.28Games_interface_and_Game_Clients.29 And RetroPie lets you install KODI. That's really cool, but my Kodi is so modified and tweaked to suit my video watching needs, I'd have to have THAT one to link t...

Re: Help identifying a Rpi?

Just read the first paragraph https://retropie.org.uk It brings all the bits under a simple(ish) setup. So, RetroPie is a front end for emulators and EmulationStation is a collection of emulators. Sorry, I don't understand. I'm not getting this at all. Maybe I need to understand the chronology of e...

Re: Help identifying a Rpi?

I clearly need to research how this thing is programmed and what the difference is between emulationstation and retropie. I only use my Rpi2 for LibreElec and a Kodi install I've tweaked to play my offline media files. So the emulation thing isn't something I get how to build yet. I play emulators o...

Re: Help identifying a Rpi?

I got my friend to send me a photo of his error. It appears every time he loads a game from his retropie. (It's a Rpi3 Model B, by the way). Menus all work but every game load causes this. I had to crop because he took the image with a giant flash flare but that error is consistent all the way up th...

Re: Help identifying a Rpi?

Try...the top of the board, right next the GPIO header pins. If your friend can open the case, it is printed on the underside of the board. Thanks, I'll try those with him. Possibly not. The current most recent release of the Raspberry Pi Foundation recommended and supported Raspbian Stretch Operat...

You could simply boot Raspbian on it and ask it to identify itself...
You need to remember as I said, I don't physically have the Pi and my friend who has it is not someone I can ask to run tests for me.

a picture of the RPi board in question helps...
Good idea, I'll look for a site that shows images of each logic board and get him to send me a photo. If I can get him to open it up without breaking it.

Help identifying a Rpi?

The situation is that my friend bought one of those premade Retropie systems online somewhere. It doesn't run properly anymore, seems to crash out to linux. He thought it was a self contained thing like a calculator so he thought it was done for, but it sounds very much like the garbage microsd card...

Actually Retropie has an option to boot into Kodi or Emulation software:
Hmm.. but I would want that to come up every time I reboot, this looks like something you determine once when setting up the Pi.

Re: Emulation question

Kodi or Retropie are not actual Operating Systems par se... Retropie is a collection of software pre-installed on Raspbian Stretch Lite. Kodi is installable software, though some OSes use it a a Desktop Environment. Thanks for the reply and the link. But, I'm a bit confused with the OS info, I didn...

Emulation question

Surely there must be other options other than Retropie, aren't there? I have no problem with it, I'm just curious to see the options. Where can I look for a listing of other types of emulation engines like that? Secondly, sort of related, is there any chance I could run an emulation tool like RetroP...

Media center and emulators on the same device?

Does anyone happen to know if I can run an OpenElec Kodi install AND also some kind of OS with several gaming emulators on the same rpi2? Even as a dual boot? I'd like to add something like Lakka or EmulationStation to my current rpi2 already running OpenElec Kodi.

Thank you!

Re: DVD ISOs playable?

That's why everything here gets converted to high-quality MP4 (H.264/AAC) with ffmpeg before viewing, as ffmpeg is very tolerant as far as dealing with non-compliant streams goes so will either ignore or fix almost anything that hasn't completely broken the stream and outputs (cleaned-up if necessa...

Re: DVD ISOs playable?

You won't get this disc, it's already pretty obscure an dno longer in production. It's a DVD box set of a Canadian show called Road To Avonlea. I've ripped an ISO of one disc to my computer and it's on my SMB share.

Oh, ok so you're not sure that OpenELEC would, you were just suggesting that I try it? I misunderstood.

Re: DVD ISOs playable?

They're not encrypted. Don' tknow what libdvdcss is. After being extremely sluggish to start, it essentially plays every VOB one after the other if you press play. And rewind or forward freezes then crashes playback. Menu screens play their entire loop and then go to the next one. Very annoying. It ...

DVD ISOs playable?

Is there any OS that's going to permit me to play DVD ISOs with my rpi2? OSMC can't do it at all. I have several discs stored as ISOs.
Thanks for any help!
