hdmi_drive=2 .... why?

Literally every tv ive hooked every pi ive had into has required hdmi_drive=2 to be enabled to get sound working... which beggs the questions...

1 why is it not enabled by default.
2 why is in not a-noob friendly option in your noob friendly configuration program?

OPENGL issue (with log)

Like many people trying to you the experimental opengl driver I am having that issue where the screen blanks. After some fiddling I figured out if I uncomment hdmi_force_hotplug=1 that I can boot into CLI just fine. However if I try to run the GUI Xorg throws a fit. From what Im getting from the log...

Im just getting a black screen and my tv loses signal. My first install (a manual updated copy of jessie) would boot into the command line but said it "couldn't attach itself to any screens" when loading rasbian. A fresh install of jessie will appear fine but go black as soon as everything is loaded...

Low storage after updating to Jessie

After upgrading a fresh installed then updated copy of raspbain from weezy to jessie my memory on my sd card is all but used up. I went from having a couple gigs to less than 700 megs. Setting up sd card image without pc/mac

Having issues with manualy updating wheezy to jessie I've decided to just install the jessie image...however atm the pi is my only computer (laptop is dead) Is it possible to set up the image from within the pi ?

What package are you trying to install?
Was asking more for general use... but I was interested in Dune legacy specifically.

As it doesnt seem likely the Pi store will be fixed can anyone recommend an alternative?
