Re: Short USB cables

For powering my original Pi I use a Nokia USB cable that came with a Nokia N8 - about 4 inches. The USB cable that comes with a Blackberry 9800 is about 8 inches in length - both cables available on ebay.

Re: Automatic setup for RTL8188CUS based wifi adapters

Little whoopsy happened to me again tonight - this is the second time this has happened. After running rpi-update tonight, the wifi wasn't working so I ran the script sat in my /boot directory with the result - I am running the latest script, unknown kernel & script aborted. I then found the install...

Re: Automatic setup for RTL8188CUS based wifi adapters

When both LAN and WLAN are connected, the default route (there's only one - that's why it is default) is via the lowest cost route ie the LAN. Disconnect the LAN and one would only be able to access the local network. Rebooting with just the WLAN connected and the default route (0.0.0.0) will be via...

I'll have a screen and mouse if available (I already have a keyboard) don't have a pi as yet, getting it for my birthday, but peripherals now will be good as my most recent computer build has a 50p usb mouse that is dying and no screen. How much for those without the keyboard? Sorry I've been busy ...

Re: apt-get upgrade: no file name for libattr1

I think I have sorted it.
I attempted to 'apt-get install --reinstall libattr1', expecting it to fail since I assumed it needed to use libattr1 so 'cd /var/cache/apt/archive' and then 'dpkg -i' the package and bingo - apt-get upgrade working again

Just remember a 32GB card takes 8 times as long to backup or write than a 4 Gb card. The foundation developers aren't using 2 & 4Gb cards because they can't afford bigger cards.

Re: How to start without HDMI monitor?

I've looked around plenty of places at cheap monitors, and I don't think I've seen any with HDMI ports until the price gets into the £100-150 bracket. Beneath that level, you'll be lucky if you find a DVI port on them, and the cheapest only sport a VGA socket. Even if you find a lower-cost DVI moni...
