I've already used a relay with raspberry pi it works without any issues, use 5Volt pin to power the relay.

If there's no special reason for going with 14.04, then go for 15.10 Ubuntu mate, better & improved version of OS.

Very dull lights & boot loops, I've feelings pi isn't being able to power all the relays (in case they're being powered from gpio pins), as it's giving them powers not enough power is remaining for itself to work.
