Thanks so much for suggestions.

I did two things.

I changed the cable and restarted the modem and switch and all is well now.

Thanks for your replies. Here are a few clarifications. - Raspberry Pi B purchased April 2013. - the switch negotiates speeds etc so this means that it is not dumb, just unmanaged. My error. - previously the RPi was attached to that same switch which was in turn attached to another upstream switch. ...

Raspberry Pi B invisible when attached to unmanaged switch [solved]

Hello I have just had my internet connection upgraded. My Raspberry Pi B is visible on the network when directly attached to my modem TP-Link (Archer VR1600V). But when I attach an unmanaged gigabit switch (DLink DGS-1008D) to the modem and attach the RPi to the unmanaged switch the RPi is invisible...

Hello,

I have the same problem when I do not have both of my Samba connected NAS disks attached to the RPi.

Is there any way that i can have the RPI ignore the missing disk> (I sometimes need to attach a keyboard in its place.)

This technique has overcome my problem of incorrect sizing being reported by Windows. Many thankss. Can you explain how I mount two drives in light of the comment below?
