Re: Upgrading Ubuntu-MATE from Pi 3B+ to Pi 4
After my initial notification of successfully getting Ubuntu-MATE up on a Pi 4 (2GB), I realized that others might not be able to duplicate my installation so I spent the weekend documenting two ways to get Ubuntu-MATE 18.04 up on a Pi 4 using Raspbian Buster image and a Pi 3 (or maybe a 3B+). I hav...

Re: Pi 4 as a NAS: USB3 speeds
I have used JFS for years on my server data store. Pi's (2, 3, 3B+ and very soon 4) have been used with large (400 Ah, 24 vcd) battery supply (photovoltaicly charged) run the main network. I also use JFS on my desktops and laptops with no noticeable speed penalties. Unfortunately, the Pi boot system...

Re: Upgrading Ubuntu-MATE from Pi 3B+ to Pi 4
Wifi and Bluetooth come up automatically as in my Ubuntu-MATE configuration. I have moved the SSD to a USB3 Enclosure/Adapter (NexStep) which is recognized by the Pi4 without the quirk fix and my transfer rate (according to hdparm -t) is over 260 MB/s which makes the MATE desktop a bit snappier to l...

Re: Upgrading Ubuntu-MATE from Pi 3B+ to Pi 4
Thanks gilius2k15 for the tip. I commented out the dtoverlay for vc4 in the config.txt and now my Ubuntu-MATE install (originally 16.04 and upgraded last year to 18.04) is back up and running. Even though not 'officially' supported, things seem to be solid so far, but I still need to work on the USB...

Upgrading Ubuntu-MATE from Pi 3B+ to Pi 4
I recently tried to substitute a Pi 4 for a Pi 3B+ on a workstation that has been upgraded over the years from a Pi 2 to Pi 3 to 3+. The first upgrade from a 2 to a 3 was problem-free. From the 3 to 3B+, I first had to load the latest Stretch image to an SD card, then use the Stretch image to update...

Re: RaspberryPi 4: heatsink or fan
I have studied this issue for several years and find that copper heat sinks are more effective than aluminum. I also prefer to avoid fans since over the years I have had several failures (some saves since I try to display temp and fan RPMs with Gkrellm). I received my first Pi4 last week and am eval...

Brother HL-L2300D Printer on Pi
Newegg just had a special on these Laser printers for $49.99 and I picked one up to use as a network printer from a Raspberry Pi2. Unfortunately, Brother only fully supports MS-Windows and Mac and a token i386 driver for Linux. They claim that their binary portion of this driver is proprietary and a...
