I suspect the hh:17 thing is a red herring, caused by the fake-hwclock which saves the current time at 17 minutes past each hour - but you should look at what is in /etc/cron.hourly/ as those files are run at hh:17. The directory /etc/cron.hourly/ only has the file fake-hwclock and the code within ...

Alright, I see. I was planning on connecting to it in a GUI environment but for now the SSH option will suffice. I'll however look in to znc, I've only heard about bouncer briefly. Thanks

Actually I have Windows 8.1 Pro but the service doesn't exist there. Perhaps I should get the Enterprise edition as it exist there. Do you think NFS would be an improvement? If so, I'll re-install with Enterprise.

I see, so if I format it in to ext4 I wont be able to connect to the drive directly from Windows. But connecting to it through samba is fine. What about NFS then? Currently, samba uses about 40% cpu when I'm transferring files to the drive, and when doing some minor research I see that NFS is a lot ...

Mine is NTFS-formatted, would ext4 be a noticeable improvement and is it compatible with Windows and Android? I usually access the raspberry pi device containing the NTFS hdd through win and android. It's also using Samba, perhaps NFS would be better?

The hdd is powered with the power source I got when buying the drive, its output is 12V and 1.5A.

Copying a file using Rsync shows about avg: 3.06 MB/s writing from SD card to the external drive.
Writing from external drive to SD card is about avg: 6.95 MB/s

I dropped the overclocking to the standard values and I get the same speed. I also did some additional testing, and it seems that if I download a file online to the SD card I get about 7-8 MB/s, and if I download the very same file to the external harddrive it's about 1.6-1.8 MB/s. I've got a 500/50 mbit connection, cat 6 ethernet cables and I reach speeds around 50 MB/s on my desktop but on my pi I barely reach download speeds around 2.2~ MB/s. You can check your active processes with the command

See what kind of processes eats most of the memory and kill/uninstall the ones which is unnecessary for you.

I can't find any Sound application where I can choose to go with the hdmi sound instead of getting it from the 3.5mm jack.

I just purchased 2 SD Cards which arrived this morning. One is a SandDisk Ultra and the other one is a Kingston.
