Yes, I tried the gdbserver. In my original post, see the article and the link in it. It uses gdbserver. All the fiddling to get there is rather cumbersome for me, used to a quick click to set a breakpoint and a button push to start the program under test.

Now, if I send, via ssh, a program that needs root privileges, must I log on as root (sudo -I?), or if as a normal user, will the PI ask for the root password?

HAHAHAHA. a wonderful story. I will file it with the very similar others accumulated over the last 15 years running as root.

As for logging on as root, you are vindicated: it works. (You must be doing it often! )

It not so much the connection to the Pi that is troublesome, but rather debugging remotely. I can set up the Pi to connect directly by USB, but how does that help with the remote debugging via Eclipse?

Ach...the pin is there so you can connect a big heavy wire between it and a nail that goes into the ground. I see it in all the antenna mounting pics. It extends the range immensely.
