Re: Experience with Pi Emulator on Win7 & Linux?

Yes, I tried the gdbserver. In my original post, see the article and the link in it. It uses gdbserver. All the fiddling to get there is rather cumbersome for me, used to a quick click to set a breakpoint and a button push to start the program under test.

Lou.

Re: Root Account in the Pi?

(I could not resist hehehe.)

To Kusti,
Logging is root is much simpler. I hate those 4 sudo characters.
I keep a strict online time limit. Must go.

HAHAHAHA.

Lou.

Re: Experience with Pi Emulator on Win7 & Linux?

To DougieLawson,
I see, so it doesn't help with the process, but just makes things faster.

OK. Thanks.

Re: Root Account in the Pi?

To bobstro,
Excellent response! I will do as you suggested.

Now, if I send, via ssh, a program that needs root privileges, must I log on as root (sudo -I?), or if as a normal user, will the PI ask for the root password?
Regards,
Lou.

Re: Root Account in the Pi?

To Kusti,
HAHAHAHA. a wonderful story. I will file it with the very similar others accumulated over the last 15 years running as root.

As for logging on as root, you are vindicated: it works. (You must be doing it often! )

Re: Experience with Pi Emulator on Win7 & Linux?

To DougieLawson,
It not so much the connection to the Pi that is troublesome, but rather debugging remotely. I can set up the Pi to connect directly by USB, but how does that help with the remote debugging via Eclipse?

Re: 433MHz receiver antenna

Ach...the pin is there so you can connect a big heavy wire between it and a nail that goes into the ground. I see it in all the antenna mounting pics. It extends the range immensely.

(Just joking...don't do it!)

Re: Root Account in the Pi?

Kusti8, I simply asked for information; read the last part of the post to understand why. Lectures on this topic go over my head. Eclipse runs in another processor, and the program is ssh'ed to the Pi. As for setting the password for root, I tried that. It works, but I still cannot log in as root. H...

Re: Experience with Pi Emulator on Win7 & Linux?

Hello, Kusti8. Ouch...only QEMU? And that isn't easy to set up and doesn't work anyway.... Not good. I was hoping that was my way out. As for the ssh set up, you are correct, its not that bad for one project, but I run through 5-6 per day and do find it cumbersome, especially the debugging. But than...

Root Account in the Pi?

What is the nature of the root account in the Pi? Does it exist? Why can I not log into it? Can a program that needs user privileges work; will a password be asked for on the screen? I have read that the root account exists, but cannot be logged into. This seems to be a matter of design rather than ...

Experience with Pi Emulator on Win7 & Linux?

I wanted to find out what experience people had with Pi emulators on Win7 and Linux, as far as code development is concerned. I guess it has to do with fidelity in hardwares including GPIO. Could someone recommend one or two? Background: I am new to the Pi and have just set up a development environm...

Re: Debian or Ubuntu for Development on Rev B

While we're at this... why do I need Debian or a derivative ( Ubuntu) at all? Why not just use my CentOS 7, based on RHEL? What difficulties would I encounter?

Debian or Ubuntu for Development on Rev B

I need some advice picking a desktop OS for cross-platform development. This will be my first trial on the RPi, Rev B. Much of what has been written may be for the newer version of the Pi; I just don't know. I would leave the Pi as the having a normal OS for it. Wheezy was suggested. I would like to...
