Downloading that. Thanks. :) But wouldn't this be similar to Arch Linux which is supposed to have minimal background processes running? Is there any image with reduced number of read/write cycles to the SD so that it lasts longer? P.S. It'll be running headless 100% of the time as a print server. So...
Hi everyone, I want to set up a raspberry Pi a print server on my home's wifi network. Please suggest a suitable and stable distro for this purpose. I'm not very good at Linux but can get my way around the awesome guides available here at the forum/otherwise. I'm planning to use CUPS/HPLIP for my o...
What do you use your server setup for? Basic http serving (lightttpd), irc bot (eggdrop),shell services to mates (bitchx, http etc), mumble server, routing (VPN) and mail (exim). I used the hf Raspbian image initially, but I am unhappy with the lack of a Server Edition so ended up using the install...

Okay, thanks. And sorry for late reply.
All this is still in my mind. I'm yet to get my Pi from home to the University.
Will post here when I'm done...
I recently joined university and got free wifi. It runs just fine bu there is small catch. The network is open but you have to login at a page in the browser everytime you connect to the wifi AP. Now, I'm planning to use the Pi to automatically connect to the university wifi, login and and the bridg...
OK, first find a friend that knows basic electrical :D there is a 4 pin molex connector coming off the brick that plugs in to the HDD. Get a Y splitter that splits the end into 2 connectors, 1 for the HDD the second has 4 wires, 2 black ground wires, a red 5 volt wire, and a yellow 12 volt wire. Cu...
The power brick that usually comes with those usually puts out 12 and 5 volts. Use a HDD power splitter off the brick and power the Pi with 5 volts from that. Mike This was in the Basic Setup forum for a reason: I don't know much about these things :P Please be a little more elaborate. I couldn't c...
Hi everyone, As I wait for my Pi I was planning all sorts of things that would be set up once it's here but came across a problem when deciding about space issues. I only have a 4 gig uSD and even if I buy a new one, it'll be maxed out to 32GB (64?). So,I was planning to use a spare internal 3.5" SA...
Its just a hub right, it should be fine! You only need one socket for the hub, you can attach the RPi power cable to one of the USB ports on the hub itself! :P Actually,I saw this on the wiki and thought I should get the same model as yours and 500 bucks was a decent price for it. I also wanted tha...

Unfortunately SANE doesn't support my PSC 1410. Any other idea(s)? I have an ancient HP PSC 1410 I'd like to be available to every pc/laptop/phone/tablet on my home network. Would this CUPS thing let me use ALL of the functions of this mfd? I'm particularly keen on scanning ability if that's possible.... thanks :D CUPS will not allow you to use all of the function...

Customs duties are very high for India. I had to pay 1024 Rs Customs. So the net cost of shipping a RPi to India is 42$@56rs/$ + 1024 = Rs. 3380 (approx) Well, in that 1024 INR, 350 INR is DHL's handling charge and the actual duty is only ~ 700 INR. And if RS had categorized it as a computer perphe...
Hi, I have an old PC with an XFX 8600GT which was working fine until about a week ago when I heard a loud pop sound and on opening the case found the GPU capacitor to be popped. My question is can this happen on the Pi? What are the steps to prevent it (on the Pi and PC also :P). I believe it happen...
@Dave Your points are rather nitpicky. Idk but it still doesn't make much sense. @nick I see. Yeah careless mistakes do happen. But that can be avoided if just install a separate OS on another partition for this. Still no specific need for another computer. ( I mean the Pi isn't very easy to set up ...
I just got this random thought about using the Pi to learn programming. I mean why would I buy a Raspberry Pi if all I need to do is run and IDE or something and compile some code while learning. All that can be accomplished on my old desktop, can't it? Of course the Pi is great as a headless server...
I did save ~Rs. 100 by paying in GBP instead of USD. but whatever....atleast it's ordered (legitimate).
now 8 long weeks of wait.
do they really mean it, or can I expect it earlier?
UPDATE I just ordered mine for RS using a Mastercard, however they didn't ask for the Mastercard SecureCode and I wasn't even redirected to the Mastercard site. RS just took the card details(except Mastercard SecureCode) and then sent me an email giving order confirmation. The email was from Raspber...
