Extracting rootfs from raspbian wheezy

Is there any tool to extract a raspbian wheezy image rootfs from distribution image .img on a linux machine other than writing it into sdcard and then going through it on Pi after boot?

I use this to compile various modules I use. No need to compile the full linux source, just need to configure it to compile additional modules, takes less than 5 minutes.
