Re: Code to SSH in & start VNC in one line?

Thanks - maybe I'll do that then...

Does anyone know it there's a way to what I was originally planning (ie automate the VNC login process without having a pre-existing X-session running)? And with the fixed video memory allocation, is this even worthwhile? (It's a 256MB Pi...)

Code to SSH in & start VNC in one line?

I'd like to use my Pi mostly via SSH - so no need to have a VNC server running all the time - but also be able to login via VNC with minimal hassle. So I thought I'd try to write a compound SSH/VNC command to automate the process, for storage in an alias, eg: ssh [email protected].0.0.137 -t 'vncserver -geometr...

YaCyPi - Turnkey Raspberry Pi based Internet Search EngineK

I think their Kickstarter campaign explains it pretty well: What is YaCyPi: YaCyPi will be a turnkey solution for the Raspberry Pi with the goal of turning a common ordinary Raspberry Pi (Model B) into your very own search engine. Using the software YaCy, you no longer need to be bound by Google, Bi...

Setting up Vim for Python

John Anderson has done a detailed guide to doing this here . However, there's quite a lot in that I just don't understand :D I really just wanted syntax highlighting and sensible indentation. This looked doable: 0) install a bigger version of vim (eg sudo apt-get install vim-gtk ; without a GUI vers...

Apache2/PHP problem

I've been trying to follow along with the LAMP tutorial in "Learn Raspberry Pi with Linux" . It works & produces the "PHP credits" page with <?php phpinfo(); ?> in index.php. But at the next stage (logging in to the PHP database, code highlighted in the link above) there's HTTP error 500. (The mySQL...

Wlan0 starting after hard reset but not reboot...

ie wifi would work after halt , powering down and back up, but not reboot . This was happening when /etc/network/interfaces was set up to work with /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf . eg something like this (I also tried wpa-conf instead of wpa-roam). But it works fine with the simpler-style i...

Re: New post on the news page: expEYES and Raspberry Pi

They've got a smaller cheaper ($35) version now. Ships worldwide (for ~$10 to the places I checked just now).

Apart from the 50 experiments listed here, what could someone do with one of these? :?

Re: "Networking for beginners"

I just revisited this & the Pi & found Dan's CCNA 1 youtube videos very helpful. I didn't have any luck getting a signal from the Pi on a TV (via both composite & HDMI) a couple of days ago, so I thought I'd try it headless, initially connected directly to a laptop's ethernet. First I set up the Pi'...

Re: Looking for 300 cases at about $3ish USD each. Any ideas

Looking for a basic case. Doesn't need to be anything special. So far my best bet has been using a generic polycase from http://www.polycase.com http://www.polycase.com/surface-mount-lp-series I would have to drill the needed port holes myself though and would much rather have a premade case. Maybe...

There seem to be problems with Bluetooth support in Linux generally recently. I read that the Bluez developers haven't done a terribly good job documenting some of the changes they've been making.

I think it's $40ish shipped to China; RS are supposed to be charging a fixed fee for shipping worldwide.

I don't seem to have the best internet access either, so I think this is a good idea. Sheesh Jim, I'm normally quite a fan of your posts. But I don't quite know to read this one. One interpretation would be "I left the Tristate area to get away from pushy ignorant Jews and Italians and wish some calamity upon them." Well I've never been there. And where you live etc is obviously a pe...

Actually I was very impressed by Eben's catching skills. Apparently a very tolerant and even-tempered man. Re the anti-semitism accusation, "Eben" means rock in Hebrew, and there was a famous Israeli politician with a similar name . I'd have thought either of those facts would have given someone eve...

I think the one mentioned here works ok powered directly. Based on this I ordered one the other day, but I can't remember why I think that, so perhaps you should confirm this with SirLagz...

(Also note this dongle comes in two versions: with and without detachable aerial.)

Re: Python n00b, I need a basic explanation of "of".

It lets the code in the module refer to the RPi.GPIO as just GPIO, instead of having to call it RPi.GPIO all the time.

(I think this is called importing it into the 'local namespace'.)
