Re: Differences between Rasp Pi + Python and others?

Idle is a Tkinter app and is running a Tkinter mainloop already; perhaps that's the explanation. If you start your Python app on Windows from the command line (without the mainloop call), it should not run either. I tried running it via command line on windows by choosing the .py file and indeed it...

Re: Differences between Rasp Pi + Python and others?

I'm not sure why your example works in Windows - assuming that it does, because I cannot check. It does not work on my Linux desktop. The usual minimal example would require that you start the main loop: from tkinter import * window = Tk() window.mainloop() That should work. Thanks, I tried that an...

Differences between Rasp Pi + Python and others?

Asking for a friend. Bit of a head scratcher. They are using the Pi to try to learn Python (using Python 3 on the Raspi booted into the GUI). As such they've been attempting basic learner code examples from books. Unfortunately it's been failure after failure and I'm taking pity on them and their ef...

Re: sd cards shrinking from 16gb to 60mb?

If you are using Windows for formatting cards, etc. then you can use SDFormatter (Google will turn that software up. It is free.) to "restore" the areas that are invisible to your Windows based systems. If you no longer want anything on the sd card and want to delete what you've written onto it, tha...

Re: Best city simulator game?

I'd suggest trying FreeCol too, if you enjoy that genre of games. :) It's different enough to Civ to spice it up. Not sure how the Pi would handle Dwarf Fortress. It can sometimes get slow downs on desktops, it seems. All the Impressions Games are excellent and I know they were ported to Linux.

Re: Raspberry Pi 2 - What would it mean for emulation?

I can honestly see the Pi2 being a gamechanger emulation box. Even in the early days it's showing a lot of promise. Sound emulation could potentially see improvments too once we can dedicate a core to handling that, etc. It's sometimes overlooked for graphics but often jarring when it goes wrong in ...

Re: Raspberry Pi 2 - What would it mean for emulation?

I've been testing Quake 3 on the Pi2 and I'm very impressed. Far more capable of handing the fast paced action without slow downs, even under a full load of bots added to really stress it. It stays playable long after the overclocked B+ would have given up - and that's before we've really got the Pi...

Re: Raspberry Pi 2

I'm shocked and delighted at the total sales numbers for all the Pi models so far! It's going to be the biggest selling UK home computer ever. :D Maybe eventually the biggest selling ever. Amazing. I'd love to hear what the sales for the Pi2B is afte the dust settles (I expect heads will be spinning...

Re: peripherals needing powered hubs

If you are getting a powered USB hub then make sure you get a decent one. I've seen tear downs of some of them and the insides of some of them are shocking, if not downright dangerous for the Pi or any other equipment hooked up to them (all sorts of shorts, damaged wires, etc). A lot of them seeming...

Upload a video of your experiment to youtube afterwards and you might even be able to pay for any of the aforementioned damages in the process. The You've Been Framed of the current times.

Re: Acceptable input voltages for power?

Keep in mind that before anyone buys a supply that lots of tablet and phone chargers (AKA "wall warts") are perfectly suitable for the Pi as they are micro USB at 5V and with various amp ratings depending on the supply (so do check it). Doesn't need to be a special Pi one, really, as long as it is t...

Re: Raspberry Pi 2

Probably the same motivation that is behind educational discounted pricing on various products and free 'Express' versions of development tools. People tend to stay with what they are familiar with. If kids are learning on Pi then MS needs a presence on that platform or it loses a generation of pro...

Re: Raspberry Pi 2

I'll be waiting to see what the Quake 3 enthusiasts can squeeze out of it. It'll be interesting to see comparisons side-by-side with the B+ (which was rightly heralded as a great success of the time) and then later when it's optimised and settled in system-wise. From that we'll get all sorts of info...

Re: Where to buy the old RaspberryPi models A or B ?

Fleabay and Amazon have lots of bargain older models now! If anyone's wanting to do some hardware tinkering that doesn't need the upgraded Pi 2 spec or is looking for a bargain basement machine for experiments like home built Pi supercomputer or has a use that might melt, blow up or crack a board th...

Re: Raspberry Pi 2

The media centre and emulator users will go NUTS (in a good way) over this release. :) It's enough of a jump in power to make life much, much easier for these features and the change to Armv7 should allow easier access to all sorts of software for folks to tinker and set up their box to their own ta...
