Re: That PI2 unboxing: Unmistakable Odor of fried circuitry?

If I recall my electronic manufacturing days, the flow solder obviously contains a lot of heat energy. The smells from there was distinct, mixture of flux, very hot components and cleaning solvent. Some of that could have been bagged along with the Pi. Fried components had a variety of smell, transf...

Re: Best OS for Pi 2?

Given that there is some kind of Windows on phones as tablets it's not such a stretch to imagine that MS could make a Windows for the Pi. Would they ever do that? Who knows? As it stands Windows 10 IoT for the Pi is some kind of sick joke. It does not have any windows at all. It seems to not have S...

4) May be the best OS for Raspberry Pi 2 will be Windows 10. We may expect Windows 10 TechPreview in very near future, Release Candidates and final Windows 10 OS later this year. Obviously you have undertaken Zero reseaerch, the official Windows 10 which will be available for the RPi 2 is for IoT d...

Re: Best OS for Pi 2?

For Raspbian, real world use means a much smoother and less laggy GUI desktop experience from a users point of view. I've been a Pi user from the start and with the Pi 2 for the first time I've been comfortable doing normal desktop functions. As well as the extra CPU cores, you have double the RAM av...

I know that some people use a fan and heat sink on thier Pis, I've never felt the need to go that far.

Re: Canon MG6300 printer driver

This won't help directly with the Canon printer setup, but I wasted 2 hours yesterday trying to get my HP All-In-One Photosmart printer set up in Raspbian. The cups web page setup screen has an awful interface, forcing me to scroll one at a time through hundreds of model names many of which were rep...

Re: Raspberry Pi 2: Linaro(ARMv7) vs Raspbian(ARMv6) Benchma

I guess three years of optimisations in Raspbian really do demonstrate that code comes before iron when pursuing performance and efficiency together. It also seems to have proven the idea that by placing people in a resource constrained environment, people will find ways of making things work better...

Re: Buying Pi 2 - few questions

Your USB 2.0 ports may well be busy doing network, keyboard, mouse and any other duties (even if you use wired Ethernet it still uses the USB system). The Raspberry Pi camera module attaches to Raspberry Pi, by way of a 15 Pin Ribbon Cable, to the dedicated 15-pin MIPI Camera Serial Interface (CSI),...

I wonder if everybody realises that the main aim of Raspberry Pi Foundation is education, and that it is a charity. It's not about the money, it's about the cause. So the way I see it, it is something I support (rather than be a customer of) and a movement that I can be part of. Most of the other ch...

I think most of us that were with Raspberry Pi from the beginning are aware of the reasons for it, somebody new on the scene might wonder why the powerhouse GPU is not more utilised.

Re: What should I buy?

On it's own any Raspberry Pi would be completely hopeless at cryptocurrency mining at current difficulty. Even if you could use the full power of the GPU on the PI2, and your power supply was free (ie Solar) it would still take months to generate pennies. I use a B+ as the controller for a hardware ...

You mean that a Pi wouldn't remain stable through the EMP caused by a nuclear explosion?

Surely Foundation have tested this? Along with resistance to custard pie and nerf gun assault?

Re: where in the uk can you pick up a pi 2 for $35?

Hmm, I wonder why RS now charge £24.90 then? I bought mine from RS for £22.85 (plus vat) on launch day, so they've put prices up since. On launch day RS made a bit of an error. They priced £22.85+VAT with free next day delivery, I got in early and bought at this price. But I think it was a mistake ...

Mine cost less than $35 at the time of purchase, including delivery, but not including VAT. From RS.

If anyone from any of the after-market Pi accessories makers reads this, I would be interested in a Pi case that has a mount to take the new Raspberry Pi screens together with the Pi in a tidy little package.

Re: The Raspberry Pi 2 Q&A thread

I'm curious as to *why* people want to run a large SD card with the Pi. It seems pretty clear to me that if you are doing "big data" things on a Pi, the right way to do it is to boot from the SD (keeping it in the 8G range) and put your data on a HDD. Depends on what you are doing with the Pi. If y...

Re: Raspberry Pi 2 Model B CPU not centered. Should I worry?

Looking at the alignment of some of the other silk screen symbols on your board, I would say it is your silk screen that is slightly off, not the soldered on cpu chip. The spacing between contact on the surface mount chips is quite small and if there was any problem then I think the board would have...

You can usually tell by the approach of customer service when you speak to them, if they are nonchalent and quick to offer a replacement then they've probably had a few occurrences already.
