Well, I bit the bullet and took a dremel to the A+. Its a pretty bad cut. Worked. Obviously, I do not recommend this. Look at hadoop. Some of the things you want can be done to some extent with hadoop.

absolutely no problem with new images and old Pi. I have a B+ working with the latest image and all the updates applied. Sitting next to me happily monitoring a cluster of Pi with cacti.

That is not a Cloud. That's just storage with remote access. A Cloud implies some kind of distributed storage and processing which does not apply to a single computer. ok, so my recommendation is to stick a fresh image on the SD card, if possible and try your testing regime without changing any settings at all. Dist-upgrade will give you 3.18.7 which is the latest stable kernel. I would recommend you reflash your SD card rather than reinstall a kernel. In general ...

I have put lots of comments in the code. You can edit the GPIO channel to whatever pin you want to use. The program uses interrupts so it is not using any CPU resources while it is running.

There is a serial connection you can use via the GPIO. So yes, you should be fine. You will need a USB to serial cable but they are extremely cheap.

It's just LXDE with conky (combined with some shell and python scripts) on the side. I use the Numix theme and just flip the background and foreground colors using LXAppearance (Customize Look and Feel).
