Re: Source code for Bookshelf application ?

I don't know the full workings of GitHub, but when you clone or branch the repo to add new stuff to it, can't that clone or branch be made private? And then when you merge to make it final at release is all that is needed. or is it not that flexible. Unfortunately not - you can only make things pri...

That's interesting. Possibly, by analysis of which repos are private, people could speculate about what those future product releases could be.
Don't tempt me to just make all the repos private all the time... ;)

Re: Wish list for the foundation

Am I safe in assuming that a PiCamera 2 will give decent performance with the already discussed videoconferencing? I've not tested it in that role, but I can't see any reason why it shouldn't do; we've tested a number of cheap webcams from Chinese OEMs, and all gave performance which was at worst a...

Re: Wish list for the foundation

We are continually reviewing the feature list of the Pi platform, and audio input is a feature which has been considered in the past, but we are always working within cost and space constraints. Given how cheap USB audio cards are - you can pick one up for under £10 - and that it isn't functionality...

Re: Wish list for the foundation

On the RPT side... Adding audio input in the future could, I think, be a useful addition. I can think of four ways right off to make it available. How feasible each would be is another matter altogether. (Funny, isn't it, how many wished for features are so exotic. I mean, bitcoin miner? Where some...

Work with the major suppliers of video conferencing (Zoom, Google, MS and any others) commonly be used by schools to get such software working well on at least the Pi4B. Even if only with an RPT-produced camera as the only choice, and allowing for a USB to headphone/mic adapter. I say this in light...

And in any case, we've only got a random person on the interweb's opinion that it's a problem. Exactly. I did have a quick Google about this last night, and while the Chinese government do seem to control Chinese publishers quite tightly, I could find no evidence that they had any such influence ov...

Re: Please don't bundle / preinstall bookshelf in the distribution.

Wouldn't the best option be to move it to Recommended Software rather than make it part of the default install, only include it by default with the Raspberry Pi OS Desktop with Recommended Software install ? Recommended Software had seemed to be the adopted solution for not adding bloat while allow...

Is this apparently problematic application included in the 'Desktop Only' or 'Lite' variants of the RasPiOS Buster OS image?
It's in 'desktop only'. It's not in lite.

Re: Please don't bundle / preinstall bookshelf in the distribution.

Bookshelf offers access to exactly the same content as the MagPi website, via the same URLs. So if Bookshelf is illegal in China, so is magpi.raspberrypi.org, and that has been hosting PDFs for five years now without causing any noticeable issues in Anglo-Sino relations... If the website is blocked ...

It writes to ~/Bookshelf by default. We'll look at making this customisable in future, but a symlink will probably work just fine.

Re: Cannot Use Custom Menu Icon

Sorry - I should have been clearer. If you have a 48x48 menu bar, then you can either scale your images to 48x48 and put them in the /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps directory, or you can just put the 128x128 versions into the /usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps directory; they should then be a...

Re: Cannot Use Custom Menu Icon

One of the changes made in this release was to tidy up all the lxpanel icon handling code, which was (frankly) an awful mess; it now uses the same icon loading and scaling routines throughout, but it does mean that you can only use actual icons, not arbitrary image files, which it sounds as if it is...

Re: Cannot Use Custom Menu Icon

I've just tested changing the menu icon, and it works for me - right-click the menu button, choose "Menu options" and put the name of an icon in the current theme into the box.

It has to load an icon (by name) from the current theme; it won't load an arbitrary image file.

Incidentally, while glancing at your Python code, just a suggestion - if all you are doing is calling aplay, it is probably easier to just use the -D argument to aplay to pass it the ALSA device you want to use for output, rather than fiddling about with .asoundrc.

I don't know exactly what button handler you are referring to, but if you are using assistive technology (which a speech server sounds as if it may be) I have made one change which might possibly affect things. (Because I made said change to fix a problem with the Orca screen reader...) Previously, ...

There will be more information about this in tomorrow's blog post, but basically... Previously, all of the Pi's audio outputs (headphone jack, HDMI) were ALSA device 0, with the cset command being needed to switch between them. Now, each output is a separate ALSA device. This makes things like manag...

Re: Sonic Pi 3.1 on Raspbian Buster is NOT complete.

The version of Sonic Pi 3.1 which is currently packaged and available in our repos is a proper rebuildable Debian source package rather than a binary-only version. We did use binary-only packages for a few years - which is why the 3.0.1 package is binary-only - but they are a pain for future mainten...

When you are logged in over SCP, check that you haven't filled up the SD card and run out of free space; the symptom you describe (flashing cursor and no desktop) can be caused by a full SD card.

OK, ignore the fix above - it seems this is an intermittent problem which just happened to go away when I used the older version of Flash. This is why people suggested it was to do with having an empty project - it's nothing to do with that, but sometimes it just works and other times it doesn't, bu...
