Is there a password for the motion user in Motion Project?

Hi, I want Motion to run a script on a remote server, and I'm using SSH keys to manage the security. The problem is that I can create an ssh key pair for pi but if I want to do that for the user, motion, I need to log in as motion, but when I su motion it asks for a password. Is there one? Or is the...

Re: Motion and my usb stick

I may have solved the problem. Of course it's a permissions issue. In order to get motion to run as a service AND allow it to write to the USB drive, I added the user "motion" to the "pi" group: sudo adduser motion pi I would have preferred to allow read/write to all users in fstab, but I couldn't g...

Re: Motion and my usb stick

If you log in to your Rasbpi as pi motion start = will start motion as user pi sudo motion start = starts motion as user root sudo service motion start = starts motion as user motion I'm having this problem now myself and trying to figure out the permissions. It's a pain.

Re: How to use rsync to minimize HEAT on HDs?

It's very likely that the drives are within temperature specifications, but heat it the enemy.

Ideally, rsync could refer to an index of metadata about the source drive and compare it to the index on the destination drive without having to read the contents of the file structures (causing heat).

How to use rsync to minimize HEAT on HDs?

I have two external USB hard drives connected to a single Pi. When I run rsync to back up one to the other, the HDs get hot. Is there a way to prevent this? Since this is the first time running rsync, I'm hoping that it's just because there's so much activity. But it occurs to me that once they are ...

Re: How to get sound sensor module to work?

Well, I figured it out. Those cheap modules are tuned to a very low tolerance, which is why both of the LEDs were on from the start. I expected to see one of the LEDs blink on sound detection - but instead they were both always on. By adjusting the potentiometer - turning counter clockwise - I was a...

How to get sound sensor module to work?

I bought five of these cheap sound sensors on ebay - they have 4 pins: A = Analog Out G = Ground + = 5vdc D = Digital Out I have wired it up correctly, and I'm using this simplest of python scripts: import time import RPi.GPIO as GPIO GPIO.setmode(GPIO.BOARD) # use board numbers # define input pin p...

Re: How to NOT run a daemon on startup?

Yes, there's a setting to enable daemon mode - does that mean it will run on reboot? I still want it to run as daemon - I just don't want it to run on startup.

How to NOT run a daemon on startup?

I have Motion installed and running on my Pi, but I want to start it in daemon mode manually and not automatically on reboot/boot.

How do I prevent it from running on boot?

Thanks.

Help with GPIO monitor function

Hi, I am new to Python, but I'm pretty good at PHP and JS. In the script below, I want to count how many times the function is run. But I don't see where/how the function is called. It looks like it's called in the try/catch using callback, but I don't know how that works. What I want to do is add s...

Re: database, php script, refresh value

If I understood the question correctly, you want to use AJAX.

"How to refresh value from database and refresh only one object??"

https://www.w3schools.com/xml/ajax_intro.asp

Alternatively, you could use a page with 3 iframes that refresh at different rates.

Re: HDMI - Reduce size of Desktop

The config.txt is where you dial it in. See this:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... /README.md

There are dozens of settings for this line:

hdmi_mode=16

And here are the options for that:

Re: Unable to find pictures taken by motion!

This is an old post, but I had a very similar situation that I just fixed - it was due to incorrect permissions to the target_dir. Try running it with motion -n and see if you find a write error. This was a problem with a fresh install of Jessie and only Motion. So somewhere, the install package fai...

Set Motion Package to Not Save but Log Motion?

I have installed the Motion package , but I don't see any option to log motion without generating a JPEG or MPEG. Is there any way to get it to log motion to a file or execute a script instead of writing to file?

Thanks -

Also, is there an official Motion forum? I can't find one.

Re: Security - Delete pi or No?

What do you think of this as a minimal security list for enabling public SSH? - Change password to pi and root. - Install fail2ban with 15min lockout. - Use authentication keys. - Change the SSH port number in /etc/ssh/sshd_config (and not /etc/ssh/ssh_config) - Created a BASH script: grep "ssh2" /v...

Re: Security - Delete pi or No?

Ah - see - I wondered if that was the case. Thanks, that clears it up. I am new. So to help secure, I should create a new user like "bobspi" with the same privileges as pi, delete the pi user, and use keys. I also installed fail2ban. Anything else sound like a must-do before opening up to the public...

Security - Delete pi or No?

Does it make sense to delete the pi user for security reasons, when root is still there, not deleted? I understand everyone should reset the pi and root passwords. Is it worth the trouble to remove the user pi?

Doing so is a bit of a pain, and certain packages presume the existence of /home/pi/

Re: 3.5mm Jack works for headphones but not as line out

It worked. Thanks for the replies - especially the one saying it was a stereo output. That put me on the right track.

As it turned out, it's dumb user error. I hadn't pushed it in to the jack all the way. The headphone plug was different enough to make a connection, where the other plugs weren't.

3.5mm Jack works for headphones but not as line out

I set the audio to output to the 1/4in headphone jack, and it works only with headphones. If I plug in a line that goes to amplified speakers, I get nothing. Is there someplace where I have to tell the Pi to produce line-level rather than headphone output? I suspect it's because the audio out is mon...
