Re: Is a Raspberry Pi ideal for downloading data?

Jawani, if you are currently using a USB 2 for connection of your backup HDD then you will experience little to no difference in speed when using an RPi3B or RPi3B+. The main differences between the 3B and the 3B+ are processor speed (1.2GHz -v-- 1.4GHz) and WiFi (802.11b/g/n -v- dual-band 802.11ac)...

Re: BricsCAD on RPi4B 4GB

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. It looks like I will keep my old PC - just for CAD work. I am semi-retired now so there is less CAD work to do. Being semi-retired means that you are more busy than when you were working full-time. When I get some free time I will try some of the sugg...

BricsCAD on RPi4B 4GB

I am in the process of trying to replace my 10 year old ASUS B202 mini desktop PC running Ubuntu 18.04 with a RPi4B 4GB running Raspian Buster. one of the last sticking points that I have is getting BricsCAD up and running on the RPi4B. BircsCAD is a proprietary software package by Bricsys that very...

Re: Unallocated SD Card Space

I use a 32GB card in my RPi4B and do not have your problem. Install GParted and see if yo can reclaim your "lost" 50GB.

To install GParted go to Preferences->Add/Remove Software and do a search for gparted.

Re: Raspberry Pi 4 as a primary desktop computer?

I am currently using an old ASUS B202 in my office with Win XP/Ubuntu 18.04 dual boot. The Win XP is only kept and used because of AutoCAD. Everything else is done in Ubuntu. With a 32 bit single core 1.6GHz processor and 1GB of RAM my B202 is starting to show its age. I was going to buy a new mini ...

[SOLVED] Automating Zoom In When Opening Terminal?

When using my RPi4B with a 10" screen and I open terminal from the main menu, I need to press Ctrl++ (zoom in) 6 times to get the window to a size that my ageing eyesight can read.

Is there a way automate the opening of terminal from the main menu so that it zooms in to my preferred size?

Re: raspberry pi 4 PI4 7" DPI display can not display full-screen

I had the same problem with my RPi4B 4GB and a 10" screen. Disabling the overscan in Menu->Preferences->Raspberry Pi Configuration solved the problem. Overscan is needed with older monitors in which part of the input picture is shown outside of the visible bounds of the screen. It exists because cat...

Re: RPi4B Problem Using USB 3.0 HDD (PSU problem?).

So the HDD is rated 6W, which is 1.2A at 5V. Leaving nothing for the other dongles. It would have helped if you had mentioned a WiFi dongle at the start -- why do you need that rather than the on-board WiFi? Or do you mean the keyboard and mouse dongle, not WiFi? The dongle is not for WiFi, it is f...

Re: RPi4B Problem Using USB 3.0 HDD (PSU problem?).

I tried using wired USB keyboard and mouse. That solved the WiFi problem so it looks like there can be a problem with 2.4GHz wireless and USB 3.0. I still wanted to use my wireless keyboard and mouse. Now understanding that it was a wireless interference problem, I wrapped my HDD USB 3.0 cable in al...

Re: RPi4B Problem Using USB 3.0 HDD (PSU problem?).

I was also concerned about two PSU's in parallel "fighting". That may require some circuitry to try and overcome that problem - if I decide to go down that road. The HDD is a Western Digital 1TB that is rated at 6W maximum. Yes, the USB WiFi dongle is 2.4GHz. That could be the problem. I will try wi...

What are the red and green lights on the RPi4B board doing as you power up? If they are behaving as expected then it will probably be a monitor and/or HDMI cable problem.

I also included a 1N4007 in the circuit as you suggested to protect the transistor from back EMF as the fan motor is switched off and slowing down.

Middleagedhusband, I had a very similar problem with my new Raspberry Pi 4B 4GB. Zulimations, they are called a heat sink and are used to help cool integrated circuits (IC's) like your Raspberry Pi's central processing unit (CPU). They normally come with a thermal adhesive tape attached to their underside. This is not normal double-sided tape but rather a special tape that is de...
