Did some more head scratching. Seems that I can ping my Pi ok with another PC (Win8) in my home network, also the samba share pops up nice. With my Win7 machine, ping and ssh by ip works, but no trace of the Pi with name. Any help checking my PC configuration apperciated. What's funny, running XPmod...
