Re: Getting a Python script to run at startup

Hi rpdom, Thanks very much for your helpful and quick response. I've done a lot more stumbling around but I am only getting more confused. I hope you will be willing to get me some further assistance. The attached file* shows what I am trying to add to crontab. And the messages I get when I close na...

Getting a Python script to run at startup

I have a Python script which I've been running under IDLE. But now I want it to start on every (re)boot (which was my intention from the outset). The research I've done indicates that I have to put an entry in crontab to do that. The example I am following says to do sudo crontab -e ... so that's wh...

Re: Trying to Send email (gmail) from a Python script

Dougie and Dirk, THANKS! And sorry for my long absence. I had visited the url provided by Dougie and had enabled less secure applications before my first post. But when both of you mentioned it I thought maybe I should take a look at the url again. Maybe I hadn't read carefully enough or hadn't type...

Re: Trying to Send email (gmail) from a Python script

Hi Dougie,

I just signed on to gmail.com by cutting and pasting AuthUser and AuthPass from /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf into the Gmail sign in dialog. So yes, they are fine.

Thanks for sticking with me on this. Bob

Re: Trying to Send email (gmail) from a Python script

Dougie, I had just a few minutes to try what you posted Sunday night. I got the error text below. I've taken a brief look at it and don't see anything I might have a chance of understanding. I have to head out now and will not have a chance to get back to this until tonight. Thanks, Bob send: 'ehlo ...

Trying to Send email (gmail) from a Python script

I need to be able to send email from a Python script. It doesn't have to be gmail but that is what I am trying (woefully unsuccessfully) at the moment. So I followed instructions here ( http://rpi.tnet.com/project/faqs/smtp ) to get SMTP setup. Those instructions included changes to /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp...

Can I sudo startx but then run Chromium as not root?

I have Chromium and I'd like to use it via the desktop. But I use sudo startx to start the desktop because so many more things work that way. But when I then try to start Chromium it says that Chromium can't run as root. (I know that in fact it can but I also know that that's a really bad idea.) So ...

Re: lighttpd does not find my Python web page

Thank you Dougie. Your help has gotten me a step closer but I am still not there. lighttpd now looks like this: server.modules = ( "mod_access", "mod_alias", "mod_cgi", "mod_compress", "mod_redirect", # "mod_rewrite", ) server.document-root = "/var/www" server.upload-dirs = ( "/var/cache/lighttpd/up...

lighttpd does not find my Python web page

Hi, I should confess that I am new to every bit of technology involved in this question. I have lighttpd installed and working. And I have Php installed and a php web page works. I think that I have added support for Python web pages by following the instructions found here: http://raspberrypi.stack...

Re: lid (via VCHI initialization failed)

PS to my original post above ... the web page is now working. I retraced my steps and evidently made some typo mistake and failed to see the error message. The lid command still fails.

lid (via VCHI initialization failed)

I am trying to get a simple web page working which will report the temperature of my RPi. But the web page gets "VCHI initialization failed". But the command "/opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd measure_temp" (like in a ssh session) works. It doesn't even need sudo. So in my research I found that it would be a goo...

usermod command

I am trying to follow the instructions in "(Teach Yourself Visually) Raspberry Pi etc." by Richard Wentk for creating a PHP web page which will report the RPi's internal temperature. The first step says to issue these two commands: sudo usermod -a -G video www-data sudo reboot Surely I don't need to...

Re: Where did my Desktop icons go?

Thanks very much Dougie. So many things didn't work without sudo that I had started to use that in front of every command without even realizing it. And I wouldn't have guessed that sudo would get me a different Desktop, although now that you mentioned it I sort of understand why. So thanks again. (...

Re: B+ RPi to Cobbler Ribbon Cable Orientation ?

It looks as if you are connecting to something like Adafruit's T-Cobbler-plus. TC+.jpg If so, make sure that pin 1 on the cobbler (arrowed) connects to pin 1 on the Pi, at the end closest to the board corner Thanks Burngate. I had read about pin 1. On the cobbler end I am confident that I have it r...

Ok Dougie, I hadn't heard of Imgur before but the photo is now apparently there. They gave me a whole list of links. I assume that at least one of these will get you there:

B+ RPi to Cobbler Ribbon Cable Orientation ?

It's looks like the ribbon cable would attach to the RPi either way and I figure that it's real bad to get it wrong.

Is this (attached photo) right?

Thanks,. Bob

Where did my Desktop icons go?

Hi, After my RPi boots up and I log on I usually do a sudo startx. When the Desktop came up I used to see a number of icons on the left side. But now they are no longer there. I did nothing, at least intentionally, to remove them. I can still find the apps via the menu that pops up when I click on t...

Re: Desktop: Finding and Viewing Boot Log Messages

Thank you very much ghans and Dougie. I had Leafpad but nothing about that name made me think if might be a text file viewer or editor.
