Re: Pi 4 + netbook or just get a pi-top?

OH! i forgot to ask the most important question is the Pi 4 faster than the atom machines? salesman-speak says yes, but I havent seen real benchmarks against hardware yet (too early?) probably gonna have to fine some useless task for the netbooks, like IP webcam hosts (that will end up costing more ...

Re: Pi 4 + netbook or just get a pi-top?

no, installing *nix does NOT make netbooks faster Have you tried them running from ram, speeds them up no end - take a look at SliTaz & Tiny Core - small fast distros - they should bring them back to life - or at least sell them off, or give them away. 8-) they live just fine, just the *nix does no...

Pi 4 + netbook or just get a pi-top?

I have 3 netbooks that are collecting dust due to poor performance. should I try gutting them and shoehorning a Pi 4 or just send them off to recycling and get a pi-top? no, installing *nix does NOT make netbooks faster (with 3 i can side by side and see the OS is not an issue)(SSDs do, but not by m...

I wish there were more resources for this :? I have a invacare pronto m71 with SPJ joystick and a mk5 controller I picked up at a garage sale. my plans are to put a robot arm similar (but much larger) to a mearm and have the pi run everything. so far I've been shopping almost daily for parts and I a...

Re: SSH timeout, new router not showing IP

Suggest you to double check using Raspberry Pi Configuration to make sure SSH is enabled. was the first thing i did once the got the timeout error. one thing i noticed is that the router is not reporting the IP (but does show the mac address) but the ifconfig does show the ip. i think that is a rou...

oh, I wanted to remind everyone, the question here isn't if it was possible to get the monitors to run, but if it was wise to instead of getting a few HDMI monitors instead? I was looking more for opinions about resolution, screen formats, and such

FWIW, this Dell E156P monitor (similar to one of yours perhaps?) worked with the HDMI-toVGA converters I've tried: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/MoinMoinExport/HDMItoVGAandAudioConverter.html https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/MoinMoinExport/HDMItoVGAandAudioConverter2.html https:/...

other pi-like boards

a few months ago a friend of mine sent me the release about the Pine64, I just came across it while cleaning up my email inbox. overall I tend not to hop on the latest bandwagon like a neophyte. I tend to let announcements like that sit and then see how they stand up after a few months. but it got m...

these don't, that might signify the age of them
also they are the 3:4 format not widescreen

should i use these monitors or get different ones?

I have a compaq 5017 and a dell e151fp VGA monitor(s). I did not pay anything for these 19" square monitors, but if I want to use with of them for a raspberry Pi, I'll need to buy adapters the thing is, there is a pawn shop nearby that on occasion has 19" widescreen HDMI monitors for about $20-25(pl...

how to tell my Pi's apart?

I have 5 Pi's now, 3 zeros, a pi 2 and a pi 3 what would be a good way to keep track of them, Mac addresses? serial numbers? currently i am only running one at a time, but i am slowly collecting stuff needed to have all of them running at once. most i'll be running headless, and I'd like to be able ...

Re: 3.3v logic probe?

bot most of those logic probes use the vcc for supply power, and i think they expect 5v.....if you used one on a pi, youcould use the usb 5v, then measure the datapins and get 3.3v as high, but with the logic circuits in the probes work with 3.3v rails?

I am currently looking at running a bunch of N64 roms, along with one or two NES, along with a couple arcade games. Re: how to track a stolen pi?

Since you have a power source (the solar panels) I suggest you use a GPS tracker in geofence mode to send an SMS if the panel is moved away from it's home position. This is cheap enough and should tell you exactly where the panel is. Something like this: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/Nzg4WDc5Mw==/z/92M...

all good ideas, let me expand upon this, some(most) solar panels have a junction box attached to them, I was planning on putting another junction box on the panel with a pi zero in it. how to track a stolen pi?

I was thinking of using a pi in a remote area but would be a little worried about someone walking off with it. anyone thought of some way of tracking down a Pi that went somewhere it shouldn't? where i would be putting it there is no power, so it would be run off solar, and there would be no wifi.
