Cool! I will definitely give the bootcode.bin method a try! That will reduce the load on the card to practically nothing.

Hmmm. Ok - so could be the SD cards are end-of-life. Two are completely bricked - not even recognized as a drive. One has a bad bit somewhere that is preventing it from being formatted or re-used to install a Raspbian image. I can read and write to it as-is, but when I attempted to install a Raspbia...

I think this is directly related. ATM!? it appears to be a hardware problem. More may be forthcoming. But, for now - hardware seems to be creating filesystem faults.

Most filesystem errors are caused by yanking the power while a write operation is running. And that could be so - if the system has not run fsck itself - which I would have expected. On an external drive - SSD, ext4 fs. I've sent a shutdown with a forced fsck check on reboot, that is running now. Taking a long time, too.
