I realised, after looking at etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, that whenever I manually connect to a new wifi network using the wpa_gui, it was marking the previous network as disabled=1 in the in the wpa_supplicant.conf. Getting rid of the disabled=1 lines left me with a conf file looking jus...

If you're using x remotely over ssh then you don't want to run startx. You want to
1) Have an X Server running on your Mac or PC
2)

And then you can e.g.
