I Installed Arduino IDE on my RPi, it seems to work. However, I didn't connect the Arduino yet, due to lack of USB ports.
Instead of a powered hub: Should it be possible to connect another 5V supply parallel via the GPIO pins? Both 3,3V and 5V connections are available.

Would a forkreader like the Omron SX1071 work for you? Otherwise, there are IR receiver modules like the Vishay TSOP4838 IR-modul 38 kHz, the suitable transmitter frequency can easily be renerated by the new GPIO PWR function. Myself, I tried the Omron fork reader.
