Practicalities

On the afternoon before the symposium we are holding two parallel workshops, followed by an informal networking event.

Our intention is that the workshops will draw on the experiences of participants and provide a forum for interesting and innovative ideas to emerge, as well as new opportunities for collaboration.

The workshops and networking event will take place at the Raspberry Pi Foundation in Cambridge and are free to all symposium attendees.

Register for the symposium to secure your place at these events

Workshop 1: Gender balance in the computing classroom

2pm – 5pm, 31 March at the Raspberry Pi Foundation, Cambridge

Leaders: Hayley Leonard and Oliver Quinlan, Raspberry Pi Foundation; Peter Kemp, King’s College London

Format: You will hear first from the workshop leaders about participation and assessment in computing with relation to gender, and the new DfE-funded Gender Balance in Computing project. You will then work in small discussion groups around various aspects of the gender balance in computing.

Why should I attend? This workshop will be of interest to you if you have an interest in gender, or have reflected on what impacts gender balance in your own classroom, or are interested in carrying out research in this area

Workshop 2: What does research-in-practice look like in the computing classroom?

2pm – 5pm, 31 March at the Raspberry Pi Foundation, Cambridge

Leaders: James Robinson and Sue Sentance, Raspberry Pi Foundation; Jane Waite, Queen Mary University of London

Format: You will look at the opportunities presented by recent computing education research findings and how they can be applied in the classroom. We will present examples of research-in-practice, and we’ll help you form discussion groups in which you’ll talk about key aspects of the issues raised.

Why should I attend? This workshop will be of interest to you if you are a practitioner looking to draw on research in your practice, or if you are a researcher wishing to discuss the application of computing education research in the classroom or non-formal setting.
