Hi all, I've been wanting to run my Pi for quite some time during tests (perhaps leaving on over night, etc). Has anyone got any impressive uptime so far? I'm worried about the temps after a long period of usage, and leaving it unattended, but apart from the main SoC, it seems fine

Any input would be welcome

We've seen some pretty impressive figures on Twitter too recently, 28 days being a good record so far.

With regards to cooling, some have talked about attaching heatsinks to the SoC, but as far as I'm aware additional cooling really isn't nessesary, even in an overclocking situation.

One of mine will hang / kernel panic / switch of display at random intervals - a few hours or a few days the other is rock solid.
I'm investigating .....
otherwise the 1st one would of been up for 2 weeks as it is it's back to 2 days now - the 2nd one gets more attention as I use that for testing out configs and setups ... it's also going to be going in a case soon.

Cool thanks for the replies, not really stretched mine yet but I imagine most will want to use theirs in a server like role as I plan to (impressive by the way SN!), so will need to think about the best way to keep it cool

max 2-3 days. The main (apparent) reason for hanghing up seems ssh with xterms usage.

The only limit to uptime is software stability. The chip could stay up for as long as you want without overheating.

Ah.. nevermind, i found it after a google search! that's pretty neat though. I wonder if it's possible to make something similar to the uptime module eggdrop uses, where the device can update a central server with its uptime to create a sort of leaderboard if you get my meaning. the eggdrop thing is uptime.eggheads.org for example.

its just basic php, specifically the system function. e.g.

btw. for the ones that are looking still how to extract 'uptime' i have something like this:

The server is running raspbian, lighttpd and php5, mysql etc.

Is there perhaps a way of running an uptime server of sorts? similar to what eggdrop has at uptime.eggheads.org have?

would be nice to see a list of raspberrypi uptimes in the same fashion.

after a few months of unstableness, and corrupt sd cards we seem to have reached a nice stable release in the last version of raspbian

i'd love to participate in a dedicated RPI uptime server, i can host it here on any number of pi's
the code is way beyond my meagre skills though

I have one providing network storage which runs 24/7 and has been in use for months - I can't even remember how many months, but I mentioned it in a post at the beginning of September so it's been in use at least that long. It's been taken down from time to time to do software updates, or add hardware or a case, or on one occasion to replace a cracked sd card holder, but except when I'm messing about with it, it just sits behind my monitor doing NAS serving 24/7.

so far so good, i have a ups now but don't want to shut down to change out the power, any ideas how to hot swap ?

You could do it, but I'd say to do it safely you would need some half decent electronics gear and knowledge to do it safely (to the point that if you are asking this, you don't).

Maybe bridge some temporary power directly onto the board where the micro-SD socket is soldered on, then unplug old power, and then plug in new power, then disconnect the temporary supply. ??

This doesn't take into account voltage and current requirements (limits, even), and seems like a metric bum-load of work just to maintain an uptime number...

i already power the board via the gpio pins so as to avoid the darned mini usb lead sticking out the side
thats my biggest gripe with the pi, that all the leads stick out in all direction, i know theres little space but perhaps they should have stuck the essential sd card ethernet and power along the same edge

any way, its the matter of what happens when you introduce some more 5v dc from another direction :-)

needless to say i'll experiment with the 5v first rather than the 240v ac
