is it possible to connect RPI to pc or mac via usb and then ssh?

USB serial console cable and Putty, which gives you a terminal like ssh does, but it's direct with no network. I did a how-to here...

You can use an FTDI cable (commonly used for programming Arduino) to connect the Raspberry Pi to a PC using the GPIO pins and then use a serial monitor (e.g. Putty on Windows, CoolTerm on Mac) to log in.

I think you can use Android phones too , there was a post about
just using a USB cable to SSH in.
