Power Supply / USB Hub

Hi there,

Ive had the Pi around a week and need a little help!

I have had problems, i cant have my keyboard and mouse in at the same time (Logitech G110 and Razer Deathadder) ad they take too much power and both just go off and neither work.

I also cant use my wifi dongle / ethernet for the same reason!

Now I have done a lot of reading and kind of need some clarification!

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S2 charger as my power, do I need A) A better power supply (if so what spec will i require?) or B) A powered USB hub (If so what spec?)

When plugging in a keyboard and or mouse that individually cost more than the Pi itself they are going to take a lot of power

Or option C get a $10 keyboard and a $10 Mouse (Still probably need a powered hub since you have wireless)

So I will not need a new power supply to have plugged in my Keyboard, Mouse and WiFi dongle in the powered hub?

There are a lot of USB hub's out there and the key thing you need to look for is the Hubitself to have a good PSU.

I have been using an old Belkin F5U010 this has a 4Amp PSU and has no issues.

I have written up a case study http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=28339 on the saga I had with my WiFi it probably needs soe clean up before it goes to Wiki (feedback would be appreciated) in this case study I do highlight some of the USB hub switching needed to get this to work.

There's also some info re-doing this from command line posted after the case study here http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=28569 which could provide an alternative. Uses wicd (I got a slagging but I can live with it).

The second one does refer to the old image of Wheezy but the updated wiki page (in work) is in work and not that different (probably only the title needs changing) There is stuff in there re PSU and USB Hubs

If you are in the UK look to Asda/Tesco value USB wired Mouse Keyboards they work great (UK only)

I have had no problem setting up my WiFi dongle I got it running fine just a pain having to switch the mouse and keyboard over with it in!

Thats when I originally bought a non powered USB hub which worked on and off (Using a cheaper keyboard and mouse)

However now im back home from Christmas I want to use my PI with my current setup (HDMI Monitor, Logitech G110 and Razer Deathadder.)

I just wanted to make sure a Powered USB Hub (To power my peripherals and Wifi) would be enough and I wouldnt also have to buy a new actual power supply!

I am kind of a noob i suppose! I had linux years back and have picked it back up fairly quickly and even started learning Python!

Im not looking to spend much as I kind of thought me being able to use my mouse, keyboard and ethernet all at once was a given when I bought the RPi! Not that I am complaining I love it!

It phisically looks ok but there's no detail on it's psu (sadly usually the case) have a search through posts here as this pops up often and there's allways some response often with a recomendation. You say 1A I wuld look for 2A or better like I say mine's 4A

I have to say mine had been lying in a drawer for years so the exact model probably is not available (the fact that you used Amazon.co.uk points to UK user) Maplins in the UK do a kit that includes a powered hub (I can't vouch for it) that comes seperate (you don't have to buy the kit) and I have not seen anyone crying over it's ability to cope however I was not looking.

Put Raspberry into Maplins search engine if it's not on the first page.

They have a good returns policy & good quick mail order if nothing else look at the spec and source elsewhere.
