Design Case for the Raspberry Pi

Hi,

I  currently design a case for the Raspberry Pi. At the moment its just a kind of "alpha version" but the case will be available in approxymatly one week.
In principe, the Raspberry case will have strong version with thick walls (2mm) and an other with thinner walls in order to have a cheaper price.
On the picture there isn't the openable system of the case but I already done it on my drawing. I prefere to dont show it before it will be perfectly suitable. (the openable systeme of the case will offer the possibility to custom aesthetically the case with 2 colors (or with transparency/colors).

If you have some suggestions or questions about the design don't hesitate to say it. I will try to take it into consideration.

I have a shapeway case here with 1.4 mm wall which is very stiff and strong.

A 2 mm thickness seems like overkill to me, unless it is used with reprap printing.

With what program are you designing this ?

I take note for the wall thickness. At work I've got a 3D printer and sometimes with a 1.5mm walls it's not enough. I will try 2, 1.5, 1mm for the optimum wall thickness.

I'm using Solidworks

Really a nice case! I advise an hole or something like that to easily attach the case somewhere (eg. a car trunk or so...) and an easily accessible usb port to connect a wifi dongle and another peripheral.

To easly attach  the case I can add a system like you found on wall mirror and on a board (picture). Attached with a hook/hanger or a screw in the wall.

For the usb in principle it's accessible even for big wifi dongle usb.

Simply awesome...

Looks very nce to me. I love the 'overhang' makes it look very commercial'.

For 3d RepRap printing you will need 2 mm walls

How were you planning on holding the two case parts together?

And hold the PCB in place?

The RCA socket and the protruding USB sockets will hold one side each to one half of the case! But holding everything together and allowing the PCB to 'slotted in' is very awkward. I have some draft designs myself but until I/we can lay my hands on a production R-Pi I'm not sure any case can be finalised.

The case on my pictures is not openable. It"s just to show the general look of my alpha version. but I have already design the open sytem. There is no problem to plug the PCB inside the case. It"s not a difficulty with or without the real PCB if you have the correct dimensions of course.
I create a lot of cases for differents products in my job and if you know some design rules you can create a case perfectly fit to the application.
For the raspberry case I will print it to try of course. I have a 3D printer at my work.

That sunken Ethernet port might kill when trying to get an rj45 plug out as you may not be able to press the latch lever down on it as you withdraw it...

In principle the latch lever down will be easily accessible. But I can enlarge the acess to the ethernet port. The wall of the case are thinner than the latch lever down. So it will completly accessible to unplug the ethernet plug. The drawing makes the impression that Is very narrow but in reality it"s not the case. But I will take this in note about the ethernet port of course. My aim is to create a case fully suitable for each features of the Raspberry.

Cut 1 or cut 2. Or other. I don't know what to chose.

The first one. The curve on the second dosen't seem to fit.

Also first one…. but I noticed something…. The rca connector is located higher.

Look at the mechanical measurement of Gert, you will see that the rca connector is located higher. It is not on the same height as the sound connector.

HansH, thanks to notice the RCA port height. I will change that of course.

But at the moment I don't have a correct board for solidworks (for the RCA height). I only find for sketchup. I will redraw the board.

But it''s just some quotations to change in my drawing, it''s nothing.

I change the RCA height. And I adjust the case for all other connectors. It will fit correctly for all.
