Finally an answer to all those "Will Minecraft run on it?" threads:

Never really played with Minecraft before, is this like a lo-fi version of Second Life??

No , in Minecraft you "mine" for resources. Those can be used for building
things and whatelse - i don't know. But the concept is a totally different one.
The lo-fi impression might stem from the cubic pixelated style , which is intentional.

Think, building your second life world with virtual LEGO, and you will get the drift of it.

I'm glad I didn't say that I would "eat my hat" if minecraft would ever run on the pI :lol:

But then this is minecraft "portable edition", not the one written in Java that is a complete resource hog!

Also note that a "rewrite" of Minecraft, called "blocky" already ran on the PI.

Blocky is awesome and I guess you could say a homebrew development made just for the Pi I hope it continues I know my kids and I will keep going with it. I do like this part of the post.

play and program with Minecraft on one of the snazzy little devices

lets hope it's open enough so it will encourage those learning to program and not just some locked up version that really limits the programming aspect of the Pi. But I know some kids that are stoked.

We're really, really pleased and excited about the news. We sent Daniel Bates from Cambridge University, who volunteers for us, to MineCon this weekend, and he's been putting together some more details about the port for me, which I'm hoping to post on Tuesday; I've also been talking to the Mojang guys who are promising me some more screenshots for that post, to go alongside the one we currently have on the front page.

Oh - a nice incidental note. I'm told by Daniel at Mojang that they expect the port to work just fine on 256MB boards, although they used 512MB boards for development.

The programming is almost completely decoupled from the game itself - you can use any language you like (and even any computer you like) to control the in-game world.

Minecraft: Pi Edition will be free of charge to everyone, regardless of whether or not they've already paid for other versions of the game.

Hi,
i've downloaded it and started as described in the "HOW_TO_RUN.txt" and it works so far as I can see.
It was only a short test without network but it looks promising :-)
