Photo keyring as screen

Hello,

I'm trying to set up an old 1.5" photo keyring as the display for my raspberry pi. A long time ago I received a "Tao Digital Photo Keyring 1.5" Display - in 8 colors Version 2.0_9_29_09_RF" as can be seen here.

I have taken it apart to leave me with this PCB and the LCD screen:




I am following this tutorial as suggested by another forum member but I have got to the point where I need to type "./hackfw.sh /dev/sdX" but I can't figure out what number X is.

I tried plugging the device into my windows PC and it seems that although it is displayed, the only way to transfer photos is through "DPFMate" and it is shown as a CD. Is there a way to get around this?

This is the chip that stores the data. I'm thinking perhaps if I can wipe this I will be able to do what I like to it?

First like many this devices there a cd emulation then you put it in a usb port.
You need to swith that.. and then program it.

I've already seen all those links, the problem is turning off the emulation.

power up pi, when booted an logged in go to the console
now plug in the usb device
type in "dmesg" and look at the latest entries, the output of the command should end with several lines about registering new usb device and so on... if the pictureframe registered as device, the /dev/sdX name should be mentioned...

The link given gives you access to a windows based firmware read/write program, but we still have the issue of working out what firmware will work.

"IF" I get it to work, yes.

First step is to make a backup image of the device (I managed this previously - but will try to do it again).

Ok after a night of trying this and attempting to get the various things to build, I can conclude two things...
1) I don't know what I am doing!
2) I'll probably be better off looking for another screen and trying again. The one I have "may" work, but it clearly isn't going to easily.

I did the port of st2205term to ax206term over at forum.doozan.com . Now that my R-Pi has arrived, I can try this as well.

Pls can someone link to known working devices and where they got them from?

Anyone know where we can get compatible DPF from? Looking at various links I found coby, sintronix, etc etc but cannot find them in the UK/eBay etc...

I did the port of st2205term to ax206term over at forum.doozan.com . Now that my R-Pi has arrived, I can try this as well.

I grabbed libdpf.so, st2205term, us.kmap and fonts.txt from my dockstar usb drive and copied those files over to the rpi. It worked as expected.

No experience with that particular variant but superelchi over at doozan/VDR portal has been super helpful in porting over new frames. I tried my hand with an AVLabs AVL969S recently but that was a relatively uncomplicated port. You really have to try your luck as the merchant may ship a different model even if it worked initially for others who purchased the item earlier on.

The one I posted above from dealextreme seems to work. Are you able to display images using ax206term at all or is it purely terminal stuff?
Are there some guides about which show you how to use LCD3linux etc with these screens after you have them setup/programmed etc?
