Adding a small touch screen to the pi

Hello,

Im looking into creating an EPOS (Electronic Point Of Sale) card reader and have a question to ask about a display screen that is about the right size: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/g.....l90-113807

Would it be feasable to attach this display to the pi and have it work?

Idealy I would like to use a touch screen so that the numeric keys can be used directly plus it save me having to find a backlit number pad.

Im still looking for which thermal printer and swipe card reader to use.

In case your wondering what this EPOS unit is for then I'll explain a little. The company I work for (tgl.tv) has been using a Castles Vega card reader for our community loyalty points service but that unit is prone to 'issues' and as we are already planning on using the pi as an interactive STB it makes sence to see how well it could handle being an EPOS unit.

You'd need a converter in order to use the screen with the R-Pi, which unfortunately are pretty expensive.

As for the touch screen you can pick up the DS (almost the perfect match to that screen) touch screen modules for a few $.

Then its just a case of finding or writing a driver for the R-Pi.

I moved this topic to the project and collaboration forum as you seem to be trying to perform a specific goal with the r-pi as opposed to just asking for some general info on small screens (which we have enough topics on already)

I just looked at the touchscreen mentioned in this post, and I just have to tell you that the screen is analog.  I am not sure if the Raspberry Pi has an analog to digital converter, so you might have to include one of those in your design.  HobbyTronics does sell it.

Instead of using the DS screen, consider the PSP screen, it is already digital and would just require a driver.

The psp screen has not touch capabilty which he wants. Unless your talking about Vita (but thats pretty d**m expensive)

Thanks for the help folks, what I realy want is to have a scrren that allows me to display a numeric keypad along with an area for transaction details rather like a standard EPOS unit.

We currently use a Castles Vega 5000 in our retail network to handle transactions for our alternative currency which is earned by teaching, giving and learning hence tgl.tv

DSI drivers aren't written to work with the graphics chip yet, but if you just want to show pictures you could write a program to do that. Not a trivial program, though.

Since they put the connector on there, I would imagine they plan to support it.

It's a great way to put a cheap small screen on the Pi.

The CPU has interrupts to support DSI, so it should get done at some point.

I'm speaking way ahead of my capabilities here (hey, I got the Pi just for that, learning new things! ) but...

Since most Android devices runs ARM, and Android is based on Linux... And I'd guess some of theses devices must have screens that use dis connectors... Wouldn't it be possible to adapt / find a driver for one of theses ? Probably from the jailbreak/rooting community, but still... Ain't it a possibility ?

I am looking for a simular thing for a university project and would be gratefull if you could let me know how you get on.
