Free 4GB SD Cards!

Hi all,

I'm giving away free 4GB SD Cards to every person who submits a Raspberry Pi tutorial. It can be on anything Raspberry Pi related. I'm hoping to build a useful "how-to / tutorial" database for people to use, and the best way to get it off the ground is a bit of bribery

What's wrong with these official forums and the official Wiki? Lots of guides on there already...

I don't see the benefit in fragmenting useful info across multiple different sites.

2 Reasons really:

1) A wiki, unless you're conversant with it's percularities and mark-up, isn't user friendly for people to submit information to. Whereas mine uses BBCode, so if you can use a forum, you can submit a tutorial.

2) These forums aren't user friendly, it's a very basic setup and not really a joy to use at all. That's just my opinion of course

Last I checked this forum also uses BBCode...

I'm with AndrewS here - I see no reason to fragment the knowledge base or information

I'm finding the experience here much better since I reset my user prefs away from the defaults. None of the other forums I use are hosted by phpBB and I don't think having to click your user name to access the UCP is especially intuitive, so I had no idea that the appearance could be configured.

Thanks for your input, not trying to start a war, just trying to make things easier for people and offer something back to those that contribute that's all.

I think there's plenty of room on the internet for lots of forums and blogs and magazines about the Pi. But I do think forums are not all that good for long tutorials (ok for simple ones). Blogs are better, if the owner takes the trouble to do it properly. There's more flexibility to use multimedia and make the tutorial easier to follow with formatting etc. And then there's the small matter of limited editing on certain forums.

It takes longer to write a complex tutorial than the amount of time you can edit a post on here. Why would anyone go to the trouble to write a long tutorial and then be unable to edit it when things change? It's a double-edged sword though - perpetual editing - means if someone gets the hump they can edit all the threads they've ever posted in and trash whole sections of forums.

On a wiki it usually stores all previous versions of the page, so any vandalism (even if it's by the original author) is easy for other users to revert.

I've just submitted the tutorial "Adding USB Drives to a Raspberry Pi" (http://www.rpiforum.net/forum/tutorials ... pberry-pi/), which details how to add/remove USB flash and hard disk drives to/from a Pi via mount/umount if operating from the command line or a drive doesn't automagically show up in the file manager on an X window desktop such as LXDE.

I can use a 4GB SD card now that the new Debian Wheezy beta is available and pretty much fills a 2GB card

When it comes to tutorials, I seem to find multiple Guides useful as different people have different methods to do the same thing. And often while they may have the same method, they might explain it differently that different people may comprehend differently. I find multiple different version better because sometimes I do have problems understanding one over another.

Frankly, no one has cracked the nut on organizing the tutorials on the eLinux wiki or anywhere else, AFAICT. I have to use a Google search to find anything on that site, and even then, I get a lot of cruft from non-Pi parts of the site. Many of the pages can't be filtered using a keyword like "Raspberry" and/or "Pi" - people aren't always including those terms on their pages. It might help if there were a page naming convention that included something like "Pi_" on every page associated with the Pi boards.

Hopefully if I get to the stage of having enough tutorials to warrant extra categories, then it'd be a doddle to arrange in an orderly manner.

EG, you could have categories on:

1) Default linux distribution installation
2) Installing hardware
3) Media Centre guides
4) Emulator guides

etc etc, it's really only limited by imagination and content available.
