I'm interested on experience on using SSDs rather than USB mobile disk drives to create a complete non-mechanical solution. In particular will they operate reliably without a powered hub i.e. directly powered from the RPi's USB socket.
With prices dropping below £100 for a 256Gb device this could be a cool combination - in all senses!
Anybody running SSD on RPi?

You wont be able to power a SSD or HDD from an unmodified Raspberry.
The USB ports have 140mA fuses in them.

[actually I'm powering the RPi from the Hub and have the hub plugged into the USB to provide extra USB slots,
the SSD is plugged in via a 2.5" Sata to USB Adapter which is powered from the hub also ]
works fine as a silent operation machine
I've not yet boxed it up but will in due course.

RaTTuS have you measured what your SSD is actually pulling?
The 256Gb SSD jobbie is rated at 2W which is 400ma @ 5V. With mechanical USB portable disk drives taking around 500ma that seems a high figure so I thought it worth checking against reality. Or are SSD not energy savers?

I'll hook the RPi up direct to the ssd and not via a hub

I run an SSD. Got a small SSD (actually 60G which is not really small) and a really cheap external disc USB cabinet (smallish box). The cabinet came with a power cable, USB in one side. I found a USB charger 2amps with two outlets. One outlet goes to the pi and one goes to the SSD. Short USB cable from pi to SSD.
It works quite well.

that SSD needs more power than the RPi can provide
even a good PSU measuring 4.97 across tp1 tp2
even if I use both USB sockets and a Y cable,
if I connect the RPi to the usb SSD and power it from a HUB then it boots - if power from the RPI only - no boot.

Shame, so there's no real point in switching from portable USB drives which are so much cheaper/Gb unless vibration/movement is an issue.
I see eBuyer are doing 1Tb jobs for £65. I'm using HP Touchpad USB PSU to power both the drive and RPi via a hub.

you can make the device very small and quiet with a 1.8" SSD ;-p
as a media player no noise from a HD is good ;-p

I know I'm necro'ing this post, but this is false information.
I can connect a 480GB Corsair Force GT SSD directly to the Pi and power it just fine.
I also tried this with a 60GB Corsair Force 3 SSD with zero problems.
This is on a 256MB Pi and a 512MB Pi.
Just trying to get updated information out there in case someone is intersted in this type of setup.

I suspect that you are testing on Pi's without the USB polyfuses? That will definitely be the case for a 512MB system, and will also be the case for the more recent 256MB systems. When I tried this myself it would not work on the older Pi's (because of the polyfuses) but worked fine on newer ones without the Polyfuses.

It's not false information. Rather it's outdated. But there's enough Rev 1 boards out there for that info to still be valid.
It is entirely correct for Build Rev 1 boards. Rev 2 (ECN0001) and up will be fine because they have either 0 Ohm fuses or none at all.
It's still not recommended to draw too much power from the Pi because the main Polyfuse might trigger.

As above really, i have the rev 1 board and couldn't run much from the USB port.
Since I have bypassed the polys (and done the wire on the back hack) I can almost run a 2.5" SATA drive from it. I say almost because i can connect it and it mounts and can get small files, but when running Raspbmc and trying to stream i get lock ups, which i presume is lack of power.
