What are your Other Hobbies / Interests??

Being a new dad, I find little time these days to get stuck into big projects, but my other hobbies are:

Cooking (and eating); hiking; birds; gaming; perfume; ticking things (trees, wild flowers, more birds) off obsessionally in field guides; BOOKS; shoes, clothes and makeup; playing the piano; old movies (especially MGM musicals) - does "really nice hotels" count as a hobby?

I used to be very keen on sleeping too, but then Raspberry Pi happened. And I spend about an hour a day floating in the bath with a book in order to maintain my mental equilibrium.

retro computing, and reading (all kinds of stuff, philosophy, sociology, but also technical stuff, and fiction), I own a large collection of retro computing stuff, and have a large library.
Then watching some blues musicians doing their stuff, etc.

I got really stressed out around the end of February (no points for guessing why), and decided I would read more Crap Books. (They are capitalised thus in my head.) I'm still reading lots of Non-Crap Books (I've got the Alexandria Quartet on the go at the moment), but I've been making some space to simultaneously read Gardner Dozois Sci-Fi compilations, historical bodice-rippers about 17C Japan and Things with Dragons on the Cover.

It's surprisingly good for the soul.

Damn right it does
Apart from being Chief Shareholder (but not CFO ) in The National Bank of Mum and Dad, I'm a Seasonticket Holder at the mighty Blues (Premier League Champions ... ahem!) and am allegedly killing the planet and destroying its habitat with my Land Rover (these days this mainly involves camping, burning things and drinking beer) - there, that should ruffle a few feathers

No feathers ruffled here. I was pointed at an eco-website (wish I had the link) by my sister in law a few months back, where you had to fill in your energy-use habits, your water use and so forth. And your aeroplane use.

Our house has solar panels and an air-source heat pump. I cycle rather than drive. We share baths at weekends, are careful with water use in general and wear jumpers rather than turn up the heating.

The website issued you a pink pig for every bit of planetary damage they thought you were doing, each pig a little fatter than the last.

Even with all the above, once I entered my annual plane milage THEY RAN OUT OF PIGS. It appears that I personally am responsible for the deforestation of an area the size of Wales.

Love it. I do have a bike but I mainly work from home so the Landy doesn't come out much and so I am reasonable carbon friendly.
And besides - you can't do this on a bike

I have a friend in Wellingborough who's currently raising his Pajero by 8 inches (quite an engineering challenge)... he does a lot of "Green Laning" in the UK in the midlands. It's always looked like s lot of fun, but I've never tried it..

How many books do you have on the go at once?

My books are usually aviation based, as I seldom get time to read these days, I make sure it's a book that will be interesting to me, something I can learn from.

Although "French Children Don't Throw Food" may be my next, after recently having a little baby girl.... )

I've just yesterday finished "Empire Of The Clouds" - about the demise of the once great British aviation industry since the 50's / 60's..

"Man In The Hot Seat" by Doddy Hay was good, he was Martin Baker's Ejection Seat guinea pig! (well written, as he wasn't just an #AvGeek, but also a London journalist).

An old favourite: "Into Thin Air" - a history of aviation medicine, the science behind keeping aircrew alive..

Blimey - in my time....competitive dingy sailing, offshore yacht racing (culminating in 1999 Fastnet), windsurfing, kayaking, kart racing, car racing (see here..http://s175.photobucket.com/albums/w143 ... es_photos/). Also try to play the guitar (acoustic and electric), power kiting, homebrewing, some amateur astronomy (Celestron C8 on goto mount). Nowadays spend most of my time maintaining the house and cars, and looking after the children. Anyone who says that children won't change their lifestyle is deluded, I do hardly any of the stuff above any more.

Yes, our 5 month old baby takes up most of our time...

I've given up working on the Lightning, was every Saturday (for about 18 years), still only really involved on a consultancy basis.

We had no Ski trip this year, but hoping to include her in that over the next few years!!

I love skiing (And EE Lightning's...if the Mosquito didn't exist it would be my favourite plane), but the other half is not a fan, so my plans to teach my crowd to ski is not going well. Cost is also an issue - European ski holidays are very expensive nowadays

oh I did forget one hobby that I do seem to spend a lot of time on.

murder and crime in general, but mostly murder. I have a whole 32gig sd card full of pdf's on poisons and other methods of murder and I think i'd be quite good at it if I decided to have a go

don't worry Liz, it's a mostly theoretical interest however i do give fair warning to those that are planning to annoy me not to accept an offer of a shellfish dinner at my place especially if I mention i have been repotting asperdistras

Other interest besides embedded computers?!?!

Just kidding. So many other things to list...hmmm. I'm an avid downhill skier, studied martial arts for most of my life. I grew up on Lake Michigan (one of the Great Lakes in the US) so I love being on the water and nature. The girlfriend and I go Geocaching, mountain biking and hiking. I speak Esperanto and want to become a polyglot (one who speaks many languages). I am an Amateur Radio Operator (KD0PIO for all you hams). I'm sure there is more...

I used to do homebrew for a hobby. I got carried away and now do it for a living! I am also quite musical - I play the tuba in a brass band and this keeps me very busy in my spare time. I also play the piano (grade 8) but am really out of practice now. What else do I do? I look after an assortment of cats. I have an old Land Rover which I sometimes tinker with. I also go walking in the Lake District when I get chance. I don't have time for anything else!
