What is the greatest game of all time?
I realize this question is open-ended and cannot really be agreed upon but, nevertheless, it would be nice to read your responses
GAME: Space Invaders
WHY: Quite simply one of the most recognized games in the universe. Its the defining moment of gaming. It had it all - Great character design, simple spot effects, red-raw game play, and controls which are so easy, even Grandpa could play. It was a game which required timing and concentration too
Ultimately, Space Invaders was addictive, having that "just one more go" quality
Greatest game of all time

The first game I played to death was Elite II; I even went so far as noting the best routes and items to buy and sell to enable the most profit and figured out that the turret could still be turned when the game was paused and a beam laser would still fire, making combat a lot easier! God, I still love that game!

I can't pick my game of all time, so many I like for different reasons

Game: Tetris
Why: First of all, it runs on (nearly) every System (even on my Texas Instruments 84+ calculator) and it should be the first game i've ever played (as i remember).

To be fair SwampPuppet, I never played Elite, only Elite II. Was it as good as the second version?

I don't know, I never played elite 2. I spent a huge amount of time playing elite though. Docking was an insanely difficult skill. I bought x2 and x3 and freelancer all much later, because of the impression it left on me.
I don;t play games these days but my favourite game evar is probably Sid Meier's Pirates. I've been round the Caribbean more times than Richard Branson. There is something immensely satisfying about taking things that don't belong to you.

Excepting Shades (natch), it's clear that it's Chuckie Egg right? JamesH, I'm well with you on Defender - have the Paper Arcade version under my monitor on my desk - but, BUT! Chuckie Egg was the first game where I felt that *I* was in control of the motion of the charater and where the environment responded to me and *not* vica versa. Kudos to Nigel Alderton and the author of my particular version, Doug Anderson

Team Fortress, and of course, Team Fortress 2.
I have been playing for more than 10 years. I wonder if a Pi will run a tf server?
This is my personal best game but after reading other peoples responces, on a global scale Tetris has got to rate highly as a game for all time because it brought so many people to the concept of gaming that would not otherwise. It is a 'casual' game that people recognize rather than something targetted at people who have a specific interest in gaming.
.... on the cabinets in work there are some organzation codes on a notice that read TE+IS, so i wrote an R on it and drew tetris blocks...

For single player: Zork
For Multi-player: Hunt
Yes, were talking unix, VMS, TOPS-20...not DOS (apple or win).
If I had to pick a non unix game:
Wasteland (Apple II)
or
Elite (C64)

Might and magic 7 with out a doubt.
The best rpg ever, played it every day for hours at a
time, still had quests and things to do, didn’t get board ever. Great story
line, good graphics for its time and in my view everyone should play it.

I'm going to put my vote in for Star Control 2 (which can legally be downloaded for free from this site (though they call it The Ur-Quan Masters)
Why: For me it was a very iconic game. It was basically a top down space fighting game, but in it you had to gather resources, solve puzzles, and gain allies. I still play it once every few years just because of how expansive and amazing a game it is. Each time the game play is unique and even though I know what to do and when to do it, it just doesn't grow old. Somehow each time is fresh and exciting!

Dear forum: Play nice
Ok Ill bite and seporate my list into catagories.
Console retro:
HERO (2600)
Breakout (5200)
Contra (NES)
Castlevania (NES)
Super Mario Bros. (NES)
Console classic:
Super Mario World (SNES)
Zelda: Link to the past (SNES)
Super Contra (SNES)
Castlevania 4 (SNES)
FF series (SNES)
Crono Trigger (SNES)
Gates of Thunder (TG-16 SCD)
Lords of Thunder (TG-16 SCD)
Castlevania SOTN (PSX)
FF 7 & 9, but not 8 (PSX)
Gaurdian Heros (SS)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (SS)
X-men VS SF (SS)
Modern Console:
SF 4
Classic PC:
X-com (the strategy games not the crappy action games)
Wingcommander 2&3
X-wing tie fighter
Quest 4 Glory series
Arcanum
Civ (all of them)
Starcraft
Modern PC:
Witcher 1&2
Borderlands
League of Legends
Dota 2
Dead Space 1&2
Mass Effect 1&2
Dragon Age 1
Far too many indie games to mention.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some of my favorites. If I had to pick one game as the best it would be Crono Trigger on the SNES. I just love that game no matter how many times I play it the game is still damn good. There are a lot of other games that I liked back in the day but I didn't include them on the list if I couldn't still plug them in play them and enjoy them.
For the people that said Chuckie Egg, I just recently played that when it was re-made on Uzebox.

For me it"s a toss-up between 3 : Defender & Robotron by Eugene Jarvis (both way, way ahead of their time, brutal, and more addictive than crack) and the Vic-20 version of Matrix by Jeff Minter.
Infocom"s "Trinity" is a work of beauty, and "Lurking Horror" was the first game to actually make me jump.
Then there"s Balance Of Power.
If it was just one game, though, it"s Defender. 30 years on, it"s still the greatest.

Bring a race simulation nut to this say i blame Revs on the BBC Micro for my addiction, i played that game for ever. Also a big fan of a Spectrum game called Splat! It was very simple but at the same time obscenely addictive.
Finally My school had a Tandy TRS-80 which i was lucky enough to borrow one summer holiday when i got addicted to Mission Impossible which i finally managed to finish after much frustration and a simple forerunner to Pirates which if memory serves me well was called Shanghai.
I do still play a few modern games but still hanker after the oldies and occasionally dig out an emulator and play some of them.
Hm, i wonder if the Pi might be persuaded to run an emulator or two?

Space Invaders – good enough to commit to ink anyway
Wow. That"s true dedication
I agree with the Tetris comment that it bought many people into the world gaming. The game certainly is casual and easy to pick up. I guess it appeals to peoples organisational skills
Here"s more ..
GAME: Pacman
WHY: Like Space Invaders this is another iconic game with great character design and playability. Utilizing a simple yet sold concept. I guess it was one of those games responsible for many a coin being fed into the arcade machine
GAME: Pong
WHY: If you were asked to produce the most bare-bones, naked, simplistic 2 player game then it would have to be Pong. Again, this is one of those games which hooked the players. Controlling a "block" to get a dot bouncing back and forth proved to be so captivating. Its one of the first games new programmers try to make too

Game: Horace goes Skiing on the Spectrum
Why: Because it was the first computer game I got and i still remember playing it for the first time, it was so far ahead of the old bat and ball console i had.
Closely followed by Doom which was my next big jump in gaming impact wise.
