XBMC can't read files! [Help!]

I have tried both OpenELEC + XBMC, and Raspbmc

http://www.raspbmc.com/2012/05/raspbmc-is-now-in-beta/
http://openelec.tv/component/k2/item/23 ... -supported

but both fail to see the files on my harddrive (powered external WD 2TB connected to powered hub)
it sees the drive, and sees the folders, but my (.mp4) files are not listed, even under 'file manager'

What filesystem is the drive using?

Airstream, I believe we've discussed this before and even if you're just trying to be helpful, all your posts consist of advertising this one product. I've given you a week ban as a second warning, if you continue to promote this one product it will become permanent.
