RISC OS on Raspberry Pi

Hi,

I tried yesterday the 22 sept image, and I must say it's brilliant.
Glad to see that the mouse pointer is now correctly handled.
I was surprised by the quality of the image I got on an LCD TV using composite video. I had tried HDMI (works OK), but I wanted to see if composite was usable. I did not expect to have 1024*720 readable and 800*600 perfect. I guess it's because the TV keeps the image in memory and thus elliminates the flickering of interlaced picture.
BTW, is is possible to get progessive scan on the composite output ?

Just thought I'd update you (if you didn't already know) from the thread on RISC OS Open (link below), that the RISC OS distro for the Raspberry Pi has now been frozen, ready for distribution. The alpha downloads have been taken off in the meantime.

I happen to have been caught out by this. I tried the earliest alphas but they were not very usable on 5:4 monitors. A few days ago I looked again and found that all alpha distros were withdrawn with the implication that they may not have been lawful.

I can still download the alpha ROM/kernel and make my own image, which boots fine, but as a RISC OS beginner I cannot work out how to format/configure the image so that I can SAVE back to the card from BASIC.

Not true. They were removed because alpha testing was concluded and the official distribution was imminent.

First off - Brilliant News!

One small problem. I followed the link, and downloaded riscos-2012-10-16-RC5.zip
Inside that is a folder 2012-10-16-RC5 and inside that ro519-rc5-1876M.img.bz2

I was expecting an .img file, not a .bz2 file!
My WinXP won't open that, and nor can Win32DiskImager.exe cope.

Why is the .img file inside a .bz2 inside a .zip file? why compress it twice?

Or am I doing something silly?

I'll be at Feltham tomorrow, so I'll ask there, but I see lots of people having this problem!

7zip will extract the .img file that is inside the bz2 file. The image is 1876Mbytes decompressed.

The main question is they talk about a 3 button mouse in help, is that necessary ?

7zip is free and truly open source. Google should answer everything else.

Had a word with a guy at Feltham, apparently the bz2-inside-zip was an error somewhere down the line, and it should get sorted shortly!

Unfortunately I don't have a middle button or scroll wheel, so I guess I'm out of luck. Looks wonderful though.

My first experience with RiscOS was yesterday night, but I'm already impressed as the combination of the Pi and RiscOS is both: a true retro experience and a fast, compact and refreshingly different OS where even BASIC still makes sense. And to some extend I am just happy to eventually enjoy this mysterious OS after all these years. Thank you, RiscOS developers!

Very nice . Back then, I owned an Amiga and never considered changing. After all, 'we' had preemptive multitasking ;-P. I must say it feels good, very responsive with lots of nice ideas. I hope RISC OS on the Pi will attract lots of new users!

I have buyed RPi (plus case) just for Risc OS.
As kid I have seen on coputer show Acorn Archimedes (I had ATARI in that times).

1. There was a rich tradition of tracker software for risc os, not sure how much of it would run natively. This is a player :

Risco OS comes with a native music editor called Maestro. Find the example files in documents.

2.Risc OS comes with native graphic support and editors for both bitmaps and vectors (!Paint and !Draw) respectively. There are 3rd party applications which enhance these further.

3. There used to be, use !Store and !Packman to explore which are still working.

Here's a list of software for RISC OS including links to 3rd party websites. Some of it won't run or require the Aemulor 26-bit emulation layer, which hopefully will become available in future. As always the list is very much a work in progress but should give you an idea. Some of the software is included in the NutPi package btw.

P.S.: ProCAD+ doesn't seem to be in the list,not sure if it runs on the RPi but it has been recompiled for ARMv7 recently. And the Pi of course supports ARMv5 compatibility mode.
Always worth having a look what !PackMan has to offer too!

The graphics acceleration could be done by using OpenGL ES which is fully accelerated by the GPU using one of the Pi's Linux releases. I'm not sure if it is / can be accelerated for RISC OS, too.

Slightly unrelated, but: Now that the OpenGL ES glue code is published, I wonder if someone *could* implement an OpenGL 2 or OpenGL ES library on RISC OS with reasonable effort. I know there's Mesa, so it's only about a driver for the GPU, right?

I finally ordered my first RPi today(unfortunately we were forced to use the BBxM for our project). Already have a SD card ready to go, as well as a ADFS E+ formatted USB stick for a second disk drive.

I am interested to find out if the RPi port of RISC OS has better support for USB optical drives than the BBxM. I would love to be able to write a good CD-R utility if there is a good enough driver available.

I will be playing with RISC OS quite a bit once I get my RPi. (Unfortunately all 4 of the BBxm boards I got for personal use are dead[A problem that I have not had with any other ARM based board, the others just will not run RISC OS]).

I hope to get the apps that I have been writing in RPCEmu tested on real HW and release some of the utilities that I have been creating to fill the void on RISC OS. I will not say what yet as I do not wish to get my hopes up until I know that everything works on real HW.
