- Synced to 2012/06/08
- Disabled incremental updates, means apt-get update is much faster
- Workaround for a kernel bug which hangs the Raspberry Pi under heavy network/disk loads.

My RPI is for a simple torrent downloader / sharing folders on my private network.
Does "Workaround for a kernel bug which hangs the Raspberry Pi under heavy network/disk loads" solve the kernel panic issue when uploading files or downloading torrent files?

I think it does solve it, but I didn't test it with torrents.

so is the hard-float enable on this images ?

This is the one with the official Debian armel packages, so no hard float.

I got it when trying to install Gnome, and the system hung on installing Bluez, and Gnome-bluetooth, and Gnome-session.
I couldn't get rid of it either, removing it still left the partially installed parts there, and they try to install for any other package. i was going to attempt to apply the patch, but i ended up wiping it and starting over, and haven't reinstalled Gnome.

Is RAID support built into the kernel? After I install mdadm and attempt to create a RAID, I get the message "mdadm: unexpected failure opening /dev/md0". I got the same message with the squeeze image. Thanks.

No, why do you need raid with a single cf?

I'm currently using an old netbook running Ubuntu with RAID, mdadm and samba as a file server for the other computers in my home. I have five 500 GB USB drives raided together (RAID5) on a USB hub to give me a 2 TB drive with parity. If I could replace that netbook with a $35 Raspberry Pi, that would be AWESOME! Thanks for any help. Also, I'd be happy to do a writeup on how to do all of this on the Raspberry Pi once I get it all working.

Would love to know how this was made, would you be willing to share a brief tutorial?

Ah fair enough, I figured it wasn't as simple as compiling a new kernel with a load of R-Pi stuff thrown in, I'll have to hack about.

In short hard float is faster but it doesn't use official debian repositories.

Conversely, are the Raspberry Pi patches going to be accepted into either upstream or Debian (or both)?

Not in the near future.

The current USB driver for the Pi is horriblly lowe quality code and needs a rewrite to make it acceptable to upstream. People are working on this but it's difficult without proper hardware documentation. So it is likely to be some time before usable Pi support gets upstream (minimal boot support will likely get upstream much earlier but without USB it's of very limited utility)

Debian have a policy against accepting kernel patches that aren't accepted upstream because of the maintinance headaches it creates.

chromium-browser : Depends: chromium (>= 10) but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I am sure that 'GrumpyOldGit' said that he had managed it, but (despite a request) I don't think he everr actually explained how he was able to do so, although I have a feeling that he managed to sort out the dependency issue somehow.
