Connecting a fan to the gpio connectors

Im looking to get a small fan to cool my raspi, and im wondering what connector I need to be able to plug it into the GPIO ports on the pi? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Akasa-AK-4020MS ... 112&sr=1-1 is the sort of fan im looking for. Thank you for any help

That fan is rated at 12V. The gpio pins can supply a few 100 milliamps at 5V. The fan might not even turn with just 5V.

If you're using the 5v output pin then you have as much power as the USB ports.
I'm also using a micro fan rated at 12v this works fine using 5v and although it spins a little slower there is sufficient air flow for cooling.

I've backed the project - have to wait a while though. Real time clock will be really useful when no network connection is available to set/get date/time in an application I am working on.

I use a USB-to-3Pin adapter, like the one shown below


That particular one is listed on FrozenCPU.

I plugged the cable into one of the USB 3.0 Ports on my MondoHub and it works fine to power a 50mm fan.
