That link is very very out of date. If I remember correctly you needed some very specific display timings to make it work correctly, and there were many reports of this method being incompatible with all but a few (long out of date) ATI graphics cards. Even if it was a compatible graphics card, you needed to configure specific timings in software.

In any case, this method is overkill for the RasPi. Any old LCD that accepts a composite input will work, and you'll find far more of those than you will find small LCDs that you can mod to work with VGA/DVI.

Hope I don't sound like I'm out to rain on your parade. I'm long-term bit-tech reader/user and re-using LCDs (especially laptop LCDs) as a secondary/alternative display has become a bit of a bit-tech forum meme ;).

I'm not really following this topic, sorry if I'm rehashing old news. You guys aware of that ?

I am pretty sure that the 3.5" LCD I bought from fleaBay is exactly the same model as the first link there... It has two composite inputs (which will work with r-pi) and a 2.5mm power socket. The seller I bought it from did advise that it would work with a 9v supply, but I haven't managed to get it working on anything less than 12v. Either way, 9v/12v is well within the specifications for the r-pi (which, I believe, is 6v-20v) so all you'd have to worry about is suppling enough current to power both devices.

Looks like I found a good match then; I'll definetely order one of those screens. I like how they apparently can still be used as an external monitor for other sources using the second input.

I previously got Doom and Midnight Commander running through one of these screens on a BifferBoard (http://noshbar.xtreemhost.com/.....index.html and http://noshbar.xtreemhost.com/.....index.html), but I couldn't find somewhere local to the UK that sold the non plug-and-plug versions anymore.

If anyone has a tip on where to get them, I'd appreciate it.

Also, this might be of interest to someone: when I get my Pi board, I intend on putting it inside a PSP case (got a mauled one off eBay), and finishing off my C port of http://jjs.at/software/pspdisp.html so I can use the PSP as a screen/power source.

Failing that, Tesco is selling some second hand Samsung photoframes that are DisplayLink compatible...

I hope I'll get 5fps screencasting und a proper console done. At least the console and 0.2fps should be possible with lcd4linux. 0.2fps is enough for some monitoring stuff at least.

Any news on getting these devices, I'm in the uk and so far not had any luck sourcing one of these devices, without crazy p+p.
Edit: I think I've found a suitable one ($8.50 - it'll take a few weeks to get here but will report details if it works).

What other things can act as display link clients? Could I put some software on my laptop or tablet and then use it's display for the R-Pi over usb?

The pearl screen was available at 2.90 € right now, got me one - exactly what I was looking for!
This will do until vr goggles become better (hopefully next year already).

Unfortunately the shipping made the perl too expensive for me (outside of Germany).
I'm hoping the one I got will work (or it'll become kids present).

Will also have a try with a using an Alpha-numeric display too (have some 16x2 modules to try), should be possible via GPIO.
Also if you have an iPad, displaylink apparently works with that too. Might even be able to use a psp (I've used one as a extended display from a windows laptop).

There are several threads about interfacing directly with LCD screens (have a browse), in particular with the LVDS interface etc, suggest you check them out. It seems like there are a number of standards so it'll take a while to work out which will work with the least additional electronics etc and which screens will be the best value etc.

could you uses a touch screen with the Raspberry Pi? Like a iPhone screen?

I'm gonna drag this topic back up, since I now have a RPi and I have one of the 1.5" screens. It would be neat to be able to use them together (I tried through a VM previously, but I didn't have much luck with changing the FW over on the screen).

Anyone got it working on the RPi yet?

I think you'd be better off looking for a 3.5" or bigger screen on ebay that uses spi and has a controller on it. It's great hacking the little photoframes but the screen size is a bit pitiful at 1.5" There are already linux drivers out there for plenty of little screens, ilitek, himax etc.

1.5" 128x128 is plenty for the "right" application, the cost is low and the power usage is minimal.

But I agree, if there is no easy way to use it then there are easier solutions out there with more to offer.

It is a USB device, so I can hang more than one of these off of a Pi. It also doesn't force me to unplug any other displays. I wouldn't use it as a replacement for an HDMI monitor, but it would be handy to display why my robot is refusing to move (E-stop, low battery, communication problem, sensor failure, etc...), or what mode its in and battery voltage.

This is all theoretical today, but my Pi has shipped, and the shipping company's tracking page says it should arrive tomorrow.

Quite - agreeing with hamjudo; the idea of using a Pi to control a whole series of miniature screens - the smallest I can get - around a model railway layout is what I'm aiming for - as well as some slightly larger screens. USB fed screens is the ideal way. I primarily want to load JPEGs / GIFs or similar images to them - whatever images they support - to convey 'advertising' or updating images of timetables ... on the medium sized screens (1.5-2.4"), equivalent to 'Main Station' Large Departure boards, the fine lines of text are legible, whilst on <1" its impressionistic or a poster. [This running in conjunction with the Pi presenting the timetable and tracking the trains via RFid tag readers]

Sony made a clunky wrist mounted bluetooth display for use with Android Phones. They weren't ideal for their intended use, because they are a huge thing to wear on your wrist. So one of the one sale a day ebay vendors is unloading them at $19.99 each. The pre-purchase questions that come to mind are:

Can it work while hooked to the charger? (Yes, some portable devices can't charge and work at the same time. It means they can't be repurposed for model train layouts and robot displays.)
Is the bluetooth protocol documented, so we can write a Raspberry Pi driver for it?

The product is the "Sony Ericsson LiveView Remote Bluetooth Display Watch". I searched ebay with that string, and the other vendors had it for twice the price. By that measure, the $20 price is reasonable. Note that the vendor is in Brooklyn, NY, USA. I don't know if the thing is available outside the US at a similar price.

Has anyone any experience with these things? Anyone got one of them to talk to a non-Android Linux system?

I'm not planning on buying any, unless someone posts that they actually work with Linux, and would work when continuously hooked to a power source. The concept of a wireless 128x128 pixel is intriguing.

It would totally depend on what the internal chipset is as to what your options are. The 1.5" screens are mentioned here since they can (apparently) be hacked to provide direct interfacing to the screen.
If the screen above isn't able to do that, you'll need to find some other way around it (which probably won't be too effective).
There are some screens which support connecting as a USB monitor directly out the box, although price is an issue then.

Today I took this tutorial above and did go through it with a Raspberry Pi under Raspbian Wheezy.
After installing some replacement-packages, I could compile lcd4linux with dpf support on the Raspberry.
I patched the Display firmware with the windows-tool from http://www.vdr-portal.de/board18-vdr-ha ... ost1032264

Perhaps, the actual lcd4linux-version via 'apt-get install lcd4linux' is already supporting the DPF-Display?
