Everyone's probably heard of RFID it's commonly used in supermarket product identification, security door pass keys and keeping tabs on school kids in Texas.

Something like the Adafruit PN532 breakout board (http://www.adafruit.com/products/364) together with some kind of USB cable (FTDI USB TTL RS232 cable)?
I haven't tried this personally (yet).

That device is intended for NFC use, which is typically 4 inches or less.
For typical RFID tags, like those used in many consumer products, you would probably be better of with this:
