I've read about people increasing wifi ranges on a USB dongle by simply adding a home made antenna. here is a good place to start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-range_Wi-Fi

There are some cheap (4$) USB Wifi Dongles out on eBay Ralink rt2800usb RT5370 chipped.
for 6$ there is also a version available with a RP-SMA Connector, where you can add your bigger antenna...

While this will work, in many cases it makes the equipment illegal, as it is not the system that was tested and received type approval. In the UK this is the case anyway.
Just curious what do you define long range
while a small usb adapter won't have much range

Something like this with a 2dBi I think would go twice as far.

An ultimate would be a cantenna which is strictly directional just need the right connector on a usb card. But I guess is illegal in UK

If cabling is an option CAT5 can go pretty far so this is possible get the adapter closer to the signal. Not sure the antenna but larger device so more surface.

If I buy "Ralink rt2800usb RT5370" wifi adapter I will not have to use the Occidentalis v0.2 (Adafruit Raspberry Pi Educational Linux Distro) to be able to use a Wifi adapter? I believe this Distro is for Wifi adapters with RTL8192cu chip-set.
Thanks for the help.

ferjeezy,
which gong do you have? Did you have to do anything special to make it work? Or did it straight out of the box, plug and play?
