It seems obvious to me that even if only 10% of Pi buyers want a gertboard there is no way gert can keep up with demand himself.

I bet that like with the Pi itself gert is negotiating for licensed production of the gertboard kits and he can't reveal any details of those negotiations until the contracts are signed.

I also bet that the preffered choice of partners are RS and Farnell.

All I can think of is that somebody (The first Arduino designer??) did not know enough about electronics so copied the diode from an existing circuit but left the capacitor out not realizing that you can then also leave the diode out. Or maybe there was an RC+diode but then they realized the Cap killed the dbug wire function and removed it, again without removing the diode.

Rather disingenuous that comment.

The diode is a recent addition and has only just made it in the later issues of the Uno. It was added because of lock up problems on a small but significant percentage of boards. It's use is recommended in the data sheet if you read it correctly.

It shows the Arduino team are willing to improve the design in the light of field experience. I hope the RPI team will do the same with those stupid poly fuses.

This sounds strange. There is something related to the Raspberry Pi at Farnell to buy, but you are not allowed to talk about it?

Frank, probably the typical BS contract terms that you get with dinosaur companies like Farnell. The fact that it is on the Farnell site means they will be the supplier of Gertboards just like they are for the Raspberry Pi itself and the arrangements are subject to a draconian contract.

Modern flux and lead-free solder just doesn't smell the same though...

gert had said in the past that it would be a parts package ... now weather this will now be a full assembled one - we can only wait ..... and speculate
maybe it will come with a box and psu and a pony

My disappointment lies wirth Farnell/Element14 for describing what is apparently(?) a PCB only, as a "Kit".
I understood a "Kit" to be a collection of items to be assembled to perform a function.

My further disappointment lies with the embargo. Is it commercially sensitive? To the point where you people cannot comment on what it is or may comprise?

Just wondering if the light is getting any closer or whether the embargo has been lifted....? It would be good to know some basic info, either from the foundation or their partner(s) like will this just be a pcb, will there be a full kit of parts, will there be a pre-assembled version?

I'm particularly interested in whether there will be a full kit as this will determine whether I hold off buying components or whether to start collecting now, so that by the time the pcb is available I have most of it ready to go.

I hope there is a pcb-only choice, as I probably already have the components. Of course until the official details are released, I don't know if I have the components or not I certainly have Atmega328's, a la arduino in my spares box.
