Stackable Pi

I'm looking to setup multiple raspi's for use in my workshop, to keep this neat I've been looking at stackable cases, but the main problem is that the cables would end up pulling the stack over, even with cable management.

So I needed to find a cheap base to attach the bottom case/s to make the stack more stable and this is what I've come up with. It's more useful than just a bit of wood or perspex, since I have spare drives to populate it and it doesn't break the bank.

Is anyone else thinking of doing something similar?

Ok this is for mini-itx boards but you could do something similar for the Pi.

We had the same thought - maybe not a stack a mile high but at least enough for a few RPis and daughter boards etc.

We came up with the thing you can see on http://www.thepishop.org/cases.htm and it is infinitely expandable.

The top and base are held together with 25mm spacers through which go 3mm bolts.

The next step is to use 3mm studding and lock nuts so a PiStack can be as deep as you like.

We've put the dimensions on the web site so you can make things to fit (or even make your own.)

We will have production within a couple of weeks (given a following wind!) and we certainly welcome suggestions about how the PiStack idea could move forward.

We have our own on-going project which would see an RPi at the top of the stack and some sexy daughter boards underneath controlling the rest of the planet <g>.

How about using a dvd / cd case / stand?

Or maybe even a cassette rack would be more suited in size for the Pi?

Ehm... I can't draw. But what about something like this? The stack isn't connected to the frame but the weight of the cable should keep it in place. You also could attach the cables to the board with cable ties.

If I had to use a lot of PIs I would put them on their side, not stack them. I know they are not that warm but a second advantage is that the heat does no travel up the stack.

My RasPi case stacks, but it is not seriously intended to become a rack system, more for those with just a few. Although the pictures don't show it, there are locating pieces that slot underneath to stop one sliding off the other. It is enclosed on all six sides rather than being an open sandwich.

I am having some thoughts about a secure enclosed rack of RasPies such as an educational environment might require. It's durability and ease of use that I am concerned with.

Gert is right, a horizontal system would be good from a ventilation point of view.

I have been meaning to do this myself. I also think that having the Pi's on their side would be the best solution. For this, I assume we would need a mount.

Then you could, theoretically, have these in a rack situation similar to Seneca's R Pi Fedora Remix video (@ 2:20). It's definitely not the prettiest solution.

Although, I do enjoy the thought of using a cassette rack, I just wouldn't know where to find one .
