Hey guys, I only read a little bit of this long thread, but I made my first attempt at a Raspberry Pi case today and I just uploaded it to Thingiverse.
I have no idea how well it will work with an actual Raspberry Pi, so I may need to update it, but if you have access to a 3D printer and actually print it, that'd be pretty neat. :-)

Lots of neat designs here, but for the times when we might want to take our R-Pis on the road, has anybody designed a case with an attached 4xAA battery holder w/ micro USB cable?

A few remarks on case design:
1. We are moving to favour screws or other positive mechanisms
rather than clips for case closure, as its likely the case will be opened and
closed by the users many times, for example to access the GPIO pins, and
plastic detents tend to snap .
2. The case may need a conductive coating to act as an RF and EMC
shield. The case plus board must conform to CE, UL, FCC, EMC and other
regulations including RoHS and WEEE directives. The outside should carry
appropriate markings indicating standards conformance, and places for a label
for serial numbers and legals
3. Optional ports (eg knock out) to access the expansion pins would
be good.
4. Ability to view the LEDs desirable
5. Ability to stack good
6. Capable of surviving in a kid's pocket, even when sat on.
7. The case must appeal to both male and female users, so not
appear too butch. It would be nice if users can customise it.
8. It should be iconic, and reflect Raspberry Pi in some way
9. Mounting, either to an industry standard such as Vesa or Din
Rail, or even just allowing the case to be screwed down would be desirable

True. But self-threaded screw-holes wear out quicker, especially when mauled by hands that don't know how far the screw can be safely tightened. I imagine a captive nut would break the budget?

Hi,
I'm also working on a case for the rpi.
I made the design so that everything is included into the case. the case fits to the usb but still the network connection is available.
It's not done yet. I still need to add the fixing of the upper and top part.
I want to do this by clicking on one side and use a kind of screw on the other(usb) side.
Since I made the case a bit bigger there is room for this fixing.
The compleet case is also prepaired for tooling. So manufacturing cost should be low.

Why are most manufacturers not offering this in a clear (glass) RASPBERRY color, such as a deep, dark red like that in the RaspberryPi.org logo?

Here is my concept for a Raspberry Pi case
Since there are no mounting holes in the PCB, my thought is to hold the edges using rubber panel grommets. With ports on all sides, I decided against sides on my 'case'.
The top and bottom panels will be 3/16" thick opaque blue acrylic that I have left over from another project.
The acrylic panels are countersunk for #4-40 flat head machine screws. On top of the grommets are female threaded spacers. The fasteners from the SD card side of the board will compress the grommets and hopefully hold the board in place. Although there are no moving parts in the RasPi to worry about, the rubber grommets should also provide some shock absorbtion in the event I drop it. Dimensions are 3.00" x 4.00" x 1.21" thick.
It is modeled in Solidworks, I used the RasPi model posted by Tronetix. The last image below is a cross section view.

I have an old freeview box, will build mine inside that, add a small HD with usb interface should look good cannot wait

Very nice minimalist design! I particularly like the screw offset along the shorter side to constrain the board in place, and I have also been thinking about using grommets to cushion the edges of the board.
Too bad this won"t be a product.
