Question

Has anybody got a 3D Cad of the R-Pi ,

My Pi will be about another 6 weeks before I get it , so I'm thinking out with my designing hat and start prototyping a few cases .

A 3D Model will allow me to be more creative with my prototypes , and hopefully the Pi will fit into a Dog / penguin/ Dragon or F1 car shaped case .

It appears the Google sketchup on the Elinux Wiki , is not an accurate 3d of the production model B .

Still it's useful for me to work on to get the basics right ,

I'd still like an official/accurate 3d file of the physical dimensions of the pi , so I can work on designs with confidence .

With respect , I haven't got a Pi , nor do I have the schematics ( other than the graphic available here ), nor did I design the Board . So No , I'm not the best person to do this .

When I have the correct ( accurate 3d ) Dimensions for the board ( either when I get my pi and measure them , or if the org actually gets a chance to give them ) I'll surely make my case design available for people to look at , as that will be my work ,

For the time being I'm grateful to be able to work with the kindly user supplied sketchup , even if it is inaccurate ( for the reason of accurate information not being available to that user )

Has anyone done a case yet where they have moved/replicated all the ports so that they are on one side of the case (like say a typical router). Pi is a bit of a mess with cables sticking out on all sides with the cases we see right now.

No, but I might mess with that this weekend. I'd have to upgrade my case to a larger tackle box, though.

I only have 2 cables in mine, though: ethernet and power. I'm just running it headless with X forwarding.

If you look at the instructions at stage 6 you put the supports in place, then at stage 7 you are supposed to put in the board - notice how the support nearest to the SD card has suddenly moved to the right.

I think the photos on http://www.thepishop/pihousebuild.htm are correct because they were taken during a real build without moving the parts.

Once you get your head round the fact that you are building it upside down it is straightforward.

I admit the tricky part is step 7 which requires patience. Patience, along with the ability to RTFM, is something we nerds lack (and I am one of the worst!)

Nothing that having three hands couldn't cure of course <g>

BTW: the "forgot to take the blue covering off the plastic bits" club now has six members <g>

the issue is that the board is roated 180 degrees between photos 5 & 7.

Some further feedback on the PiHouse, swapping the SD card is a nightmare, in fact I can take one out but not re-insert one without taking the case apart. any ideas?

I thought it was the other way round?

I have no problem inserting the SD card (done it a fair bit in the last couple of days with different sized cards, different RPis and different Debians!) - just turn the PiHouse over to see what you are doing.

Getting it out is harder mainly because the SD card holders on my RPis are a good tight fit - they do their best to hang on to the board. However, finger and thumb either side and pull is fine. Again, I do that upside down so I can see the card in the holder as I pull it out.

I notice some of the new RPi competitors are using SD or micro-SD holders and they have put them on the top of the board which makes life a bit easier. See www.ThePiShop.org/value.htm.

The size of the PiHouse was chosen to protect the card when in place - otherwise it is easy to get banged about. (Well, on the mess I call a desk it is!)

You could always house it in a modded Mac Mini case . I always thought the iBook Clamshell looked nice, if I could just set up an external monitor and keyboard in there that would be perfect.

I'm considering an Iomega Minimax that I have lying around ( HD Died , I replaced it with the old 80gb HD from my mini )

I might just add an acrylic case to the top and power the Pi from it .


The mini will eventually find some use , stripped down to a server or a music box . I've had it six years now !!
